How many people in a taxi in Athens?
 

Greetings,

I am wondering the maximum number of persons a taxi from the airport will take. Assuming we each have one wheeled bag (the size able to be taken on the plane), will the taxis accomodate 4 and will the drivers agree to that? I am hoping that we may be on the same flight as another couple on our flight and in that case would like to share the taxi and cost. Your thoughts please.

Yes, the taxis will take 4 people, but as an alternative, why not take the new Metro into Central Athens to Syntagma Square or Monastiraki, then either walk or take a taxi to your hotel. You'll save a lot of money. But if you do decide to take a taxi, be sure your driver understands clearly what hotel you're staying in or you might spend a lot more while he drives around and figures it out.

Would there really be a significant difference if we take four people? By the time we get to Syntagma Square and then take a taxi, it seems that the taxi wouldn't be too much more and more direct. We are staying at the Hotel Austria at the base of Filopappos Hill and I understood that a taxi would only be around 25 euros. Your thoughts?

Four of us, each with a suitcase & small carry on bag, took a taxi into Athens from the airport in May.
I can't remember the exact cost as it was the other couple's turn to pay. I know they did add on a fee for the luggage, however.
We almost always taxi on arrival after an overnight flight. We don't sleep well on planes and it is just easier to get in the taxi line than carry bags up and down steps and deal with crowds.
We did travel around Athens on the metro during our stay and found it very easy to use.

I'm such a tightwad I automatically assume everyone wants to save money in the same ways I do. But by all means, if your budget allows for a taxi then by all means take one and save yourself the hassle and stress after the long flight to Greece.

We had two trips to and two from the airport in May. We did two by taxi (one coming in late at night and one because our hotel said it would be cheap on Sun. morning) and two by Metro. Whatever the hotel people told us about the expected taxi price was off by about 20% both trips. Wouldn't count on doing it for 25 Euros if there's any traffic at all. (And that doesn't include a small tip.) The Metro from the airport when we first arrived and back to the airport when we departed Greece was easy and cheaper - 10 Euros for 2 people. So if your friends don't happen to arrive on the same flight and you want to save a little money, the Metro is fine.

BTW, I had read that the night surcharge starts at midnight, but after we paid 30 Euros to get into Athens with absolutely no traffic, someone told us it starts at 11PM.

Hi, I have a suggestion which may be helpful to you. When we were in Athens last month, we took the bus #95 from Airport to Syntagma Square. Cost was Euro 2.90 per person. From there you may like to catch a taxi.

Four people will fit fine in a taxicab - heck, they might even stop to pick up a few more people and stuff them in your cab! I agree with others who said to spring for a cab after your flight. The Metro is economical, but crowded and on certain stops, you will have to carry your bags up and down steps with no escalator. Compared to where I live in Denver, cabs are cheap in Athens.
