For my 16th birthday, my father sent me a broad. I was very lucky, I was only expecting a bicycle.

I was a broad a couple of times. English pantomime requires cross dressing of actors/actresses. Does that count? I have also been overseas many times.

I can't speak for the majority of people in either the United States or here in Canada, but I'm a traveler at heart, Europe once and counting (loved it!) and many trips to New England to visit relatives. It's great being a Canadian traveling overseas!

I'm an American. Have been to Europe 3 times visiting: Netherlands, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Belgium, & Switzerland. Lived/worked in Luxembourg for a summer. Also Canada, Mexico, various islands in the Caribbean. UK/Ireland--5 times since marrying a Brit with Irish parents (husabnd and son have dual citizenship). Can't wait to go again. Goals: Italy, Spain, Scotland. Have to say my husband has travelled to far more countries with more variety that I have--Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Greece, Turkey, N. Ireland, many in S. America and he has also been to more US states!

Ten times going on eleven. British Isles on my first trip in 1979, with subsequent trips to France, Italy, Spain, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. I've enjoyed all those countries but France & Italy are, by far, my favorites. <BR><BR>

My guess is that most Americans have been abroad at least once. And remember, you don't need a passport to go to Canada, Mexico, and most places in the Caribbean. So far, I have been to Canada, Jamaica (twice so far and a personal goal is to visit at least once a year) and Europe. In Europe, I have only been to Switzerland and Italy, though we are going to Germany, Austria and Switzerland for several weeks this summer. I agree that the expense for overseas travel is somewhat prohibitive, but once you go, it is really hard not to go back. I can't wait and am very grateful for the advice I have received on this forum.

I was thinking of being a broad, but then they brought out that big knife and I changed my mind.

The question was how many of you have been abroad. Why did people start listing all the places they went in detail? Many of you people seem obessed with proving yourselves. It is like I got 99 trips and look how much many countries I saw! Are you the same people who go bragging about their kids' SAT scores/colleges and sports scores, your net worth,etc. It is not just the Americans doing it--the non-Americans seem to have started it here. I find it pathetic!

Linda, most Americans have never been outside of this country. This was reported in AAA Travel Magazine a few years ago.<BR><BR>I have been watching this board for a long time. It seems to me that many of the posters here have never been abroad and are mental midgets playing games.<BR><BR>Real travelers don't post some of the nonsensical, inane topics that that appear hear at Fodor.com.
