how many nights to stay in venice

hi, will be spending 15 nights between switzerland and northern italy (como, florence and venice) next months, and have allotted 4 nights, 3 1/2 days for venice at the end of the trip. Is this too much time, or would one less night and day be sufficient. One less night in venice would open up one more night somewhere in switzerland. thanks

I recently spent 4 nights in Venice and felt it was a nice length.

What I like about Venice is that it is much quieter, more peaceful than big cities (Rome, Florence) as there are no buses, cars, or scooters.

Even in the height of tourist season once you are away from St. Mark's square or the Rialto Bridge areas you can slow down and relax and not be jostled.

I would be happy to spend a whole week in Venice at a later date to enjoy more culture (museums, shows, etc), and good dining (harder to find than other Italian cities due to tourist influence).

You would also have a very nice stay with just 3 nights, 2 1/2 full days.

We stayed 3 nights last October and, for us, it wasn't enough. We decided to spend all our time outside, it was too beautiful to be inside museums. We are planning to return to Venice in the spring for another 4 days, and will use some of that time to see the buildings/museums we missed the first time around.

You wouldn't be disappointed with 3 nights in Venice. I stayed 4 nights, enjoyed it, but would rather have used the extra night in Florence or Lake Como.

I think this totally depends on your interests. If you are interested in Switzerland for the vistas, hiking, and outdoor activities, then you may find that you planned stay of 4 nights, 3 1/2 days is fine. Personally, I wouldn't recommend less. But, I find Venice to be so rich with art and architecture, as well as pleasing walks and and great places to explore, that I would hardly think that 2 1/2 days would be enough.

The question of "too much time" depends entirely on what you plan to do there. I am going back for a week in October, and it will be my fifth trip to Venice. I can make a list of things that I would like to see but haven't had time for.

If you are not interested in churches, or art, especially Venetian art, the shorter spell could do for you. If you want to go to the various museums, palazzos, out islands, and myriad churches, stick to the longer schedule.

No.

OTOH, some people have visited Venice for a day and felt that they had "done it".

4-5 days was good for me, on each of two Venice trips so far, but I could have stayed several more quiet happily.
