How many miles is hike from Monterosso to Riomaggiore ?

Just got back from 23 wonderful days in Italy and France. One of many highlights was the trek from Monterosso to Riomaggiore. So beautiful ! Took us 5 hours, but I am interested if anybody knows how many miles/kilometers we hiked ?
Thanks !

mvlv, please give some suggestions about the hike -- e.g., do you recommend the direction of Monterosso to Riomaggiore? any other suggestions?
We had heard the other direction might be "easier." HOw warm was the sea? warm enough to swim??

Hi Alison,
We actually did the hike from Riomaggiore north, which is the way I would recommend. We took the train from Monterosso to Riomaggiore as we heard the first two legs are quite easy and beautiful. The climbing gets tough from Corniglia on...lots and lots of rock steps and shale paths. The trail from Vernazza to Monterosso is a real test. Zillions of uneven stairs and a very narrow pathway, but worth the effort. If the forcast is for heat start off early in the morning. Luckily we hiked on a cloudy, drizzly day - it would have been too hot on a "beach" day. We were only in Monterosso for 2 days , so we did not go swimming but the beautiful blue sea did look inviting. Be sure to carry water and pace yourself....and be prepared to take lots of photos !
