How many days needed to see Cinque Terre?
HI: Leaving on Oct 8th flying into Pisa. Plan to drive directly to LaSpezia. Leave car and take train to 5 villages. Hubby thinks one day? I want 2-3. How much time do you recommend in each village. How is the walking for someone with bad knees? Please help solve this difference. Any other town you'd recommend for home base? Thank you Johanna

I suggest Lerici for a home base and 'commuting' by boat across the Gulf of La Spezia to the five towns (and Portovenere).
Lerici is, in itself, an attractive town - much more so than La Spezia. It's also more pleasurable and scenic to go by boat than by train. As for walking, some of the trails are tougher than others, so you can pick and choose.
I think you're right about 2-3 days - I'd say a couple of hours for each of the towns. If using the boat, take into account the possibility of rough seas with cancellations. If that's the case, take a day trip to Lucca or Portofino by car.

I second using Lerici as a base for Cinque Terre. LaSpezia is a bit more of an industrial center. Lerici has a sandy beach, and is very scenic.
Lerici has daily ferries into all the towns in Cinque Terre. We took one day on the ferry and it took all day. We only got out at two of the towns. If you plan to do any hiking, I would think you'd need at least two days. . . .
If in Lerici, I would recommend the Hotel Florida, very nice! Right on the water, with wonderful views. Try to request a room in the front.
