How many days in each German city?
 

Hi! We're on a roadtrip of Europe and Germany is the next leg of our trip so I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions about how long to spend in each city. We're starting off in Cologne in a few days and after that we plan to do a big U ending up in Berlin for the anniversary of the Wall, (Who doesn't like a party!) but our plans are pretty general at the moment.

So far our plan is...
Aachen
Frankfurt
Strasbourg
Munich
Salzburg
Nuremberg
and the Berlin for a week or so.

What do you guys think would be a good amount of time in each? Anybody have any must see sights along the way?

We spent 3 days in Munich and one of those days we took the train to Salzburg for the day - it cost 25 Euros return. We left around 9:00am and returned late in the evening. This amount of time in these two cites seemed enough for us. We also spent 3 days in the Mosel Valley in Beilstein and 2 nights in Rothenberg Ob de Tauber during their festival in June in case you wanted some other ideas. We acutally enjoyed Beilstein and Rothenburg more than Munich and Salzberg.

Between Strasbourg and Munich, I would stop in Tuebingen. We spent a couple of days there and it's a lovely University town. Also nearby is the small town of Herrenberg as well as the amazing Burg Hohenzollern. You could spend a day in Tuebingen seeing the Old Town and then do Herrenberg and Hohenzollern as a day trip from Tuebingen.

I think 2-3 days for Salzburg would be plenty but do take a day when in Salzburg and visit either Hallstatt or St. Gilgen/St. Wolfgang on Wolfgangsee. Hallstatt can be reached by train and ferry from Salzburg and St. Gilgen is reached by bus from Salzburg.

We stayed 4 nights in Cochem on the Mosel. Loved Cochem but it's all good along the Mosel. Visiting Burg Eltz was probably the highlight for us.

We also liked 2 nights in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Simply beautiful in spite of being touristy.

Salzburg is good for 3 nights (2 days) unless you'd like to see the Salzkammergut (lake region close by). Then add nights for day trips. While there, don't overlook the area right around Berchtesgaden, including Ramsau (where we like to stay in the area) and Bad Reichenhall.

Pretty much right in the middle of the 2 hour or so drive from Munich to Salzburg is "Mad" King Ludwig's Neues Schloss (Herrenchiemsee).

You know Strasbourg is in France?

I would spend time in another Rhine river town instead of Frankfurt unless you have a compelling reason to be in Frankfurt. For me, Frankfurt lacks that German town charm or a grand classic German city feel offered by Munich.

We love Salzburg and have spent weeks there over the years. I would never limit myself to a day trip. We based there for a week last year and enjoyed several wonderful day trips. It is delightful. I agree with bettyk's recommendations for places to visit.

We also enjoy Munich and are headed back there late next month for the 5th time. It is a nice city with lots to offer and also a great base for day trips.

We like to spend time in one place that gives us easy access to others and limit our travel time.

Enjoy Berlin - we are headed there five weeks from today.

If you are going past it, a visit to Wuerzburg would be a good idea. The Residenz there is drop-dead gorgeous. Make sure you do the English tour so you get to see the whole place, other wise you miss one of the wings.

Love, Love, Love Salzburg. We will be there for 3 days next month and we won't get to see everything I want to see!

I like Munich as a staging city to get to other places. Munich does has lots of great places to see and I love the local Bavarian food. YUM!
