How late can I purchase train tickets at FCO (Rome Airport)?

After much reading here on Fodors.com, we've decided to wait until we arive in Rome to purchase our train tickets. We arrive in Rome at 9:05pm. Will we still be able to purchase our tickets at that time? Should we wait until the following morning and purchase them in Rome at an American Express ticket office. We will be in Rome for 3 days/nights. We will need tickets to go from Rome to Venice and then Venice to Florence with 3-4 days in between each train trip.

Thanks!

Please HELP!

Hi susant100-

The ticket agent at FCO should be able to sell you the Trentitalia tickets along with the Leonardo Express tickets when you get there. The last Leonardo Express train leaves at 23:37. So, as long as you get to the FCO station before it closes, you won't have a problem.

If you are planning to go the Spanish Steps the next day, you can wait till then to buy your tickets at the AMEX office. I don't think it makes much of a difference either way.

You certainly can purchase your train tickets at the airport. I found the self-service kiosk @ Termini station to be very easy to use. They've instructions in English (and several other languages) and they accept cash or credit card. The kiosks are located through the main portion of the terminal.

Thanks for the info so far. However, I will not be taking the train into Rome. Since we will be coming from Los Angeles, via Heathrow, with a 5 hour layover in London, we have arranged for a car to take us directly to our hotel. Would it be easier to do it at the Spanish Steps the following morning?

susant100-

Since you are not taking the train from the airport, I don't see why you cannot wait till the next day to buy your tickets from AMEX. I don't know what the opening hrs are for AMEX, but you might want to check before heading there.
Also, before I leave the US, I usually write down the train schedules & train #s on a piece of paper and bring that with me when I buy my tickets. By doing that, there won't be any confusion with which trains I want to book.
