How is Tuscany during December?
Was looking into spending Christmas in Tuscany. Yay or nay?

Cool, rainy (probably not snow but no guarantee), brown and crunchy. Midwinter in the country is not a great idea = IMHO. Unless you hole up in Florence or one of the larger hill towns.

Bleak !

I agree with the two previous posters and will throw in the vineyards, are wheat fields a barren as well. Rome or any place where there are lots to see as you walk the streets and places to go indoors where its dry and warm (museums, churches, cafes, etc.

For the most part, winter in Europe is for cities. Unless you go to the Alps which will be covered in snow. Follow the advice of the previous posters and find a festive city for Christmas.

Is your priority touring around Tuscany or experiencing Christmas in Tuscany? Some towns in both Tuscany and Umbria have events (religious and non-religious) in late December. Here are just a couple of links.
http://www.frommers.com/destinations...247028791.html http://thingstodo.viator.com/tuscany/tuscan-christmas/ We've been to Gubbio at Christmas time (albeit several years ago) and thought it was a lot of fun. The Orvieto jazz festival sounds good. I'm sure if you spent some time on google, you'll find more info about other towns' events. |
