How inconvenient is Wengen as a base?
Planning an almost last minute trip. Need a flat for 5 in late July for general hiking/exploration of the Bernese Oberland. Nothing available in Interlaken, Grindelwald or Lauterbrunen. How inconvenient would Wengen be as a base?

Hi M,
Train schedules are at http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/ Every 0:20 hr there is a train to Lauterbrunnen - 0:17 hr. ((I)) |

Not inconvenient at all especially if you want to go to the Jungfraujoch,{or Lauterbrunnen, Murren etc for that matter}. It is a small town, quite compact, and the train station is a short walk just about anywhere you stay. We stayed in Wengen for 8 days and visited as far as Brienz, Spiez, Kandersteg and Thun. You will love it there! | |
Hi missypie,
It depends on what you want to do. If you want to go hiking and see the mountaintops and visit other villages in the Jungfrau region, it's perfect. If you want to go beyond the Jungfrau region, it's not so inconvenient. Try looking for a place in Spiez or Thun -- s |
Have you checked rentals at Drawbridge to Europe? Theynoffer a large selection and you might find one there. The agency is based in Oregon and we had a wonderful experience renting in Switzerland from them.

I agree with swandav and JoyC...it depends on what you want to see and do (and how far you want to go for daytrips). We stayed in Wengen for 3 or 4 nights when our boys were about 11 and 14 and found it very easy to get around. We went to Murren, Lauterbrunnen, up to Mannlichen and did a long hike. It is the easiest base for going up to the Jungfraujoch. For hiking and enjoying the beauty of the mountains and visiting a few small towns, it was awesome and we'd go back in a second. If you want to sightsee farther afield, it is doable, but not quite as ideal.

Inconvenient? Wengen is wonderful as a base. The best.
We spent 6 nights there a few years ago, and wished we had longer. Get a train/funicular pass, and you are all set. Mountains are absolutely amazing. |
We stayed in Lauterbrunnen but would not hesitate to stay in Wengen. You can get to everything in the BO from there: the Jungfrau, great hiking, all the other small villages in the BO. It's a great location. Don't give it a second thought. Book now!
