Most people make a few typos... It is when people make very gross errors every other word that it gets offensive.

Shakeup: You and others of your ilk are rediculous. If it really makes your day to scrutinize posts and replys for spelling and grammatical errors, if your life is really so devoid of any other meaningful activity, knock yourself out. You are, after all, so easy to ignore.
But, it is unfortunate that you miss the whole point of this board; the questions and sharing of information regarding travel. Anything else is just so much self indulgent minutiae.

I'm inclined to skip right over posts with lots of spelling and grammar errors. For one thing, errors like that jump off the page at me, and it makes for very difficult reading. And I never, ever bother to answer ones in which the writer has misspelled the names of countries and cities he's planning to visit, unless it's clearly a typo.
Typos happen to everyone, especially on message boards like this where people are typing quickly - but constant misspellings and grammar errors are an indication of laziness or unwillingness to try one's best to communicate. There's a reason that the written language evolved from the spoken - it's a higher form of art.
Also, it's pretty easy to distinguish the non-native English speakers here and give them a break. I don't expect their English to be perfect - though in many cases it's a lot better than that of some of the native speakers!
And posts with no puncutation, all lowercase letters, all caps, internet spellings like "u" for "you," those I totally ignore.
I figure if someone wants us to take the time to offer intelligent, informed advice - for free - the least he can do is try to phrase the question using the best language he is capable of.
Having said that, I don't think this forum is an appropriate place for people to correct others' errors. It's about travel, not spelling or grammar.
This IS about travel and if someone can understand the question or answer, regardless of spelling, that is good enough for me.
There are times when it just doesn't pay to be so anal about every little thing! Travel is supposed to be enjoyable.

Don't you mean "How important ARE grammar and spelling?"
|
I hope that I am not such a snob as to skip a misspelled (sp?:) thread for that reason alone!!
If someone asks a sincere question and I have the answer, to hell with the grammer, spelling or whatever! I am not here to grade spelling!
I would rather read nothing but badly spelled posts than some of the nasty and insulting garbage that goes onto these boards.
I think some people need to get their priorities straight here, such as
Who put you in charge of the worlds spelling?
You spelled Aaron's last name correctly, but you misspelled my last name.

As for importance, I'm sure we both feel we're important figures in the entertainment business. Aaron has had a number of hit shows and, of course, you're familiar with my very popular show, Frasier.

LOL, nooooo, I am noooot grrrrrumpy, nottttatttalllll. So much for grammar and grammarians. Really, if you want to go after one another about spelling, etc., I don't care all that much. I do believe it takes a special type to get negative about someone else's writing - since not too many of us on this site do it all that well. Just my view.

I think anyone who went to school for 16 years and still does not know correct English should be ashamed to admit it.
A bunch of semi literates is supposed to be smart enough to tell the rest of the world what to do??
Gee Al....feeling a bit self important today? Wait a minute. That wasn't a complete sentence....and what's with all those periods...oh no, I did it again....arghhhh. No one will read it. I'll be banished from Fodors. I'll never work in this town again.
