We are looking at a trip from June 3-11 in Puglia and I have read 2 trip reports from this region--one in May and one in late June--both speak of extreme heat which has us wondering. We spent late May on the Amalfi coast and found the weather very comfortable--weather averages I've checked don't seem to show much difference for those 2 areas for the time period we are looking at--so now I am trying to find out if the May heat was an aberration or if early June is too hot (90 degrees or above). If you have had experience, can you please fill us in. Many thanks!

I was there late May and early June and it was hot but only 25 to 30C. It does depend on the direction of the wind, from the south and it gets very hot

I experienced very high heat in Puglia during part of my stay, which was in late May. I had been on the Amalfi Coast just beforehand and found it on the hot side, but quite manageable.

KJA--are you saying that the very high heat in Puglia is much more so than the Amalfi Coast? Thanks for the update--was it high 80's-90's? We are going to have to reconsider if so. We appreciate your help.

Please keep in mind that the day I experienced could just have been a fluke! But OMG, my one full day in Lecce (very late in May) was scorchingly hot. I'd guess (based on my potentially faulty memory) at least upper 90s (fahrenheit). Thankfully, it was dry heat. The worst of the heat was in the middle of the day, when just about everything was closed. Not thinking, I had strayed quite some distance from the center of the old town by then, and at first couldn't find a place to go inside. After looking around for quite a while, I found a cafe that was open (on the main square) and after I left it, I found another (on the far side of a park, if I recall correctly). Before and after that prolonged siesta, the city was hot, but much more bearable. And the rest of my time in Puglia was much more pleasant -- I was only there a few days, but enjoyed some limited time in Trani, Alberobello (part of which was during an intense rain storm), Lecce, and Polignano a Mare (evening only). I also spent some time in Matera (just outside Puglia), which was a tad uncomfortably hot and sunny during the middle of the day, but not so much as that day in Lecce.

So yes, I experienced higher heat in Puglia than the Amalfi Coast, but it was a bit later in May and I have no idea if it was normative. I think there would be ways to manage the heat better than I did if forewarned. I'm very glad I saw Puglia and even though I don't deal with heat well, I wouldn't have given it up just because of the heat, even had I expected it.

Thank you so much KJA--that's what we needed to know--I feared that it might be moving into super hot season then--while the trip itself covers all the places you mentioned and is sponsored by the university I graduated from, I do not want to be in extreme heat--too much. We will do that trip at another time and perhaps choose Croatia this year a little earlier. I appreciate your direct report on that.

I have a holiday home there, so have experienced many June's.

I would say, on average, I would expect in late May-early June low-mid 20s C (70-80F). Temperatures over 25C/80F in early June are certainly not unheard of, over 30/90F would be unusual for that time of year, but of course it can happen. Late June and temps over 30C/90F are pretty much the default. I avoid July and August entirely down to the heat.

Puglia does, in my experience, seem to get hotter than Amalfi coast. Maybe less breeze, flatter landscape, who knows!

Great to hear that Kate--Our potential trip is June 3-11. Low 80s are fine for us--but above that it becomes a drag--your experience will help to make up our minds. Where is your vaca home?

I am travelling on a tour to Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast in late September. Post tour, I'll be off by myself and have decided on Puglia for 6 days,where I have never been. I'll be getting there from Sorrento and intend to stay in Alberobello and then ????.

I am an older person, will be travelling by train and am looking for one more suggestion in that area before taking the train up to Rome for a few days before leaving the country. ( I'm not interested in one day accomodations, rather have two villages/ towns and move around from there).

You on this blog, all sound so familiar with the area, I can hardly wait to receive your responses.
