how has the weather been in the bavarian alps this summer?

Hi! We leave on a 3-week trip to Germany on August 14th. Just wondering what the weather patterns have been like in Germany this summer. (was it last summer that it was unusually rainy)?

We will spend most of our time around the Munich/Salzburg/Garmisch area--and then a bit around the Rhine.

I've heard that Denmark is having a very rainy summer. Is that happening in the south parts of Germany as well?

We were just in Munich 7/8 - 7/14. Rain all but one day (7/14). Spoke with many people we met and they said they have had a rainy summer.

Day trip to Salzburg on 7/10-- also rain.

We still had a blast and made the best of it!

(it was also cooler than we had anticipated)

Hi Cali -
My mother in law lives in Biel, Switzerland (near Bern). She told us on Saturday that Germany and Switzerland both have had a rainy, stormy, cool summer so far. They had hail one day last week. The temperatures are just now starting to get warmer.

Thanks! We'll make sure to be prepared for rain. We wanted to do a lot of hiking. Maybe we'll need to think of some alternative plans!

I've seen weather stats that indicate the Munich-Salzburg general area is one of the wettest in Europe on an average in any given year. so always be prepared for rain here.

Hmmm... we were in Munich, Salzburg, Melk and Vienna area mid-June for 1 week and it was glorious sun each day, not a drop of rain. In fact, there was one day when the temperature reached 32C (hotter than Rome!)We enjoyed very much our stay in this area and frankly the weather played a major part in our delight.

We were in Reutte, Austria 7/12-15, Munich 7/15-18 and Salzburg 7/18-20. The weather couldn't have been better. Not much rain, humidity low, temp most of the time in the 80's. Although, while in Munich it did get hot! I think it got up to 99 one day, which was a little too warm without air conditioning (even for me who lives in Houston, TX!). We noticed on our trip that if it rained it wasn't all day and we were still able to do what we wanted with umbrellas until the skies cleared up. I hope you luck out like we did! Have a great trip!

Thank you! We leave in just 4 days--getting excited!

We had an unusually rainy summer two years ago. This year we've had a bit of everything. A week of nice weather and then a week of rain. This past week has brought lots of rain with some flooding in lower areas. The Dolomites have fresh snow on their snowtops.

Check the weather forecast before you come and pack accordingly. Mountain weather changes quickly. On Thursday, we were in T-shirts and shorts starting our bike ride into the mountains. We ran into sleet and cold rain. We were freezing and soaking wet by the time we got down.
