How far out is Zone 2?

I've been trying to find this information on the Internet and on underground maps, but haven't had any luck. What do Zones 1 and 2 encompass?

Diane,
What city are you talking about? Paris, London ?

Diane,
I assume you're talking about London's underground. If so, check the website:
www.londontransport.co.uk
You'll find color maps with the zones delineated.

Sorry----yes, I meant London. Thanks, Wes, for the address.

Zone 2 in London stretches up to 6 or so miles from the city centre, and thus takes in a lot of the historical/tourist sites as well as many residential areas, like Islington or Battersea. A Zone 1 and 2 travelcard/day card is likely to be sufficient for tourists. If you want to go further, just buy a top-up ticket from the Tube station.
I second the suggestion that you visit the site mentioned above.
