There are a couple of different routes - - over 2.5 hours, under 4. I've only been the longer way which includs going via Schloss Linderhof and Reutte (a good overnight and hit Neuschwanstein early the next morning).

What you really need is to become familiar with one or more of these excellent websites for planning any driving trip - - great for rout eplanning, miles, time estimates, tolls, and more:

www.viamichelin.com
www.mappy.com< BR>
or

www.shellgeostar.com

Best wishes,

Rex
[email protected]
We drove it last June--Munich to Linderhof where we stopped for a couple of hours. Then through Austria with a stop for a late lunch at a nice place along the Plansee. On through Reutte to our pension in Hohenschwangau. Can't remember how long it took with the stops, but it was an easy drive and I would estimate 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 hours without stops.

viamichelin.com is very helpful

We were just in Munich for the Christmas holidays and toured areas all around. We drove to the Neuschwantein castle in about one and a half hours. It is an easy ride and an ideal day trip from Munich. Enjoy....

Another idea you might want to look at is following the Rick Steves itinerary for Bavaria and Tirol, using Reutte or Fussen as a base for one night. (This is in his Germany, Austria and Switzerland guide).

Did this 4 years ago, and it is a loop drive u can do as a full day trip. Besides being a nice ride and covering Neuschwanstein and Hohnschwangau castles, it also includes an amazing Rococo-style church at Wies, Linderhof Castle (both of which I enjoyed), as well as Oberammergau (which was nice to see due to its name recognition, but wasn't particularly interesting from a tourist perspective in an off-performance year).

Happy travels.

John H.
