How far in advance do I need to make reservations for Italy?

On Oct 16 of this year, I will be arriving in Italy for 2 weeks. I want to spend time in Venice, Florence, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast. When do I need to start making hotel reservations so I don't have to post a message saying I am giving up on Venice, or Rome, etc. ?????

Mike, I don't know about October, but I made reservations this month for June in Rome and Tuscany and didn't have any problems. One or two hotels I contacted were booked, but I was able to get good accommodations with no problems. You shouldn't have a problem waiting until April or so.

This might have been influenced by current events but I was able to book hotels for Rome, Siena, and Florence in October only 3 weeks in advance. Had to reschedule due to 9/11.

I would say 4 to 6 months in advance to be safe. For a more popular time of year, probably at least 6 months. Just check on the cancellation policies before booking if you are unsure of your plans. some hotels fill up a lot quicker than other. I booked in October for March (last year) and had no problems. I know others who tried to book some of the same hotels and couldn't get rooms.
