How early to book hotels for September trip

Not sure when to book hotels for our September 2nd trip which is for 7 weeks. I have booked our Paris hotel for October which is the end of the trip...

We are going to start in Giverny, then on to Normandy,Brittany...Loire...Dordogne......

I am wondering if I should book the Normandy area now. If not, when do I start doing this? And could I wait till we are in Normandy to book the Brittany area or is there a danger we won't get a reservation at that time of the year.

I guess I am worried that I will never get out of Normandy. My husband might want to stay there 2 weeks.

I suppose there is no hard and fast rule on this but need your opinions.

Thanks

Hi lois,

I just finished booking my hotels for September.

I got the rooms I wanted because I was early.

Ira...you don't say what rooms you booked. I know you booked Paris but did you book the other areas????????...If so I better get moving.

Got my green Michelin guides today. They do have hotels and restaurants in them.

Hi lois,

We got very good rates in St. Emilion, Carcassone, Albi, St. Chely du Tarn, Conques and Beynac.

Ira...I wish you could be my travel agent. Hint!

I haven't finished our itinerary yet but from what you are saying I really should book ahead so I have to finish planning. I just keep getting hung up on where we want to go.

I am using Green Michelins, Frommers and Rick Steves as guides but gosh if you followed the Green Michelins you would never come back to the US.

Anyway, thanks. I will keep working.

If your out of Paris itineraries include weekends, it probably is best to book well in advance. We have tried to book in July-August and found "no vaccacy."

Trapped in Normandy for two weeks? There are very, very worse fates. Finally, we stayed last fall at the Hotel de Carantec, in the town of the same name. A double room with a semi-private terrace, overlooking the Bay of Morlaix, demi-pension at the Michelin two-star resaurant, also with a panoramic bay view, was 350 euros per day. The food was fantastic!

Should have noted that the Hotel de Carentec is in Brittany. Good luck with your escape from Normandy!

Actually I am looking forward to Normandy.. I am into gourmet cooking and freely use Calvados in many of my apple desserts so it will be great to be in the area that produces it.

Your hotel sounds wonderful.

I have hotels for Normandy......now need Loire, Dordogne, etc.

I sort of would like to go without reservations though so if we see a nice town we can stay?..this will be in September through early october. Is this wise? Would we run into a problem in the Loire or Dordogne by not booking ahead?..

Hi lois,

>Would we run into a problem in the Loire or Dordogne by not booking ahead?..<

You will always be able to find something, somewhere at some price.

Do you really want to spend 1/2 day wandering from hotel to hotel on the off chance that there is one slightly better or slightly cheaper than the one you booked?

The smaller the town, the less likely that you will be able to find something as good as booking ahead.

What's your Dordogne itinerary?
