Thank you so much for the clarification about winter weather in England and the green vs. brown concept. Yes, people in many places in the US assume that winter is brown where there is no snow cover. Several weeks ago we did a driving trip straight south from Minnesota to Texas. It wasn't until we got to Oklahoma that there were any signs of green whatsoever. Everything prior to that was dead, depressing and brown/gray.

I think you have helped me a lot here because I have visited Washington D.C. in February and found some things to be green even though trees have not leafed out. Now I understand the concept you are trying to get across.

It is VERY helpful to know that temperatures are what I would consider moderate throughout English winters. So, are you saying we could maybe expect temperatures about 50 F (10 C)?

March this year was mild, around 55-60F. Crocuses were out mid to end Feb, daffs from mid Feb to end of March, Kew Gardens had an amazing display of early spring flowers. End of March saw the magnolias, camellias, forsythias and viburnums flower, tulips early April. Start of April was mild, with one day being 82F but has steadily got colder.

At Isabella Plantation, next month will see the flowering of the rhododendrons, I think camellias might have finished.

The thing about our weather is that we're on the edge of everyone else's weather systems, so it's up and down but usually within relatively mild limits.

I am from Canada and I think you can compare London weather to that of Seattle and Vancouver, only in my experience over the last 10 winters London has less rain.

In winter I need a winter jacket (that I am still wearing today but in most years have put away around mid-May) and a scarf and gloves.

Odin--Thanks for the link to Isabella Garden. It looks as though there are some lovely plants in bloom in March too.

Patrick--Very helpful photos to give me some comparisons.

jamikins--I can live with a scarf and gloves in spring. It is continuous cold and driving rai tht would put us off.

Driving rain is rare. Seeping drizzle is more likely, and then not for all that long at any one time. Or it might be cold and sunny. Or it might even be warm, with or without rain......
