How early does spring end in Rome?

Having an extra week of time off this year, I am considering one week in Rome in May. I'm an extremely low-maintenance traveller EXCEPT for a total intolerance of anything even vaguely resembling summer-- anything over 75 degrees F turns me into a complete grouch.

The "average" temperatures on weather sites look OK, but several trip reports mention heat waves in late May. Would early May be fairly safe?

There are no guarantees, but the high temperature in Rome has exceeded 25 C (77 F) in only one of the last 7 years - 2003.

In what looks like a heat wave for early May, the high ranged from 25 - 27 (with a couple of 30 C days between May 2 and 14. The overnight low ranges in the low teens so the high would probably only be reached in mid late afternoon and be held fairly briefly.

Going back 10 years or more there are only a handlful of other days exceeding 25 C in that period, and nothing else over 28 C.

The official summary data for the last 12 years;

The Average High Temperature is 22 C with a historical range of 15 C to 30 C
The Average Low Temperature is 12 C with a historical range of 5 C to 21 C

There is a 0% chance of a Hot Day (temperature over 90°F / 32°C).
(0 days out of 167 in historical record)
Most consecutive days found in historic record: 0

There is a 0% chance of a Freezing Day (temperature below 32°F / 0°C).
(0 days out of 167 in historical record)
Most consecutive days found in historic record: 0

My goodness, MademoliselleFifi, your profile says you live in New York City. You must be a grouch for most of the year. Perhaps you should move to someplace like Seattle, where it seldom gets that hot.

:-)

Nukesafe, I lived in San Francisco for 17 years before coming here!

we were in Rome end of April (first week in May) last year.
I don't like hot weather either.
The temp was very pleasant ,only one day was 27C ( we were told that was unusual). At night one could wear a sweater or a light cotton jacket.

I would not leave it for later in May.
Skipp May 1st - it is a big holiday !

Danon, do you mean avoid just the holiday itself or the whole long-weekend?
