How do we travel from Naples to Positano?
 

We arrive in Rome April 25th and our destination is Positano, Italy. The Eurail does not go to Positano. How do we get to Positano from Naples?

The shuttle is a terrible service with bad reviews.

Naples to Positano - if you can afford it - private driver for 120 euro.
OR - take the train to Salerno (rather than getting off in Naples) and then a ferry along the coast - however the last ferry departs at around 2.30-3.00.
OR - train to Sorrento and then the bus - this is not ideal.

April 25th is a public holiday in Italy so transport will most likely be running to Sunday schedules.

If you do decide to take the train to Sorrento and then bus to Positano, the train is downstairs at the main train station in Naples (follow signs for Circumvesuviana) and then the bus goes from the train station in Naples.

The train to Sorrento is a local train and we found it fine but keep an eye on your valuables. The bus from Sorrento can be busy depending on time of year and time of day. April would certainly not be as busy as summer but don't know what impact a more limited public holiday timetable might have. Luggage goes underneath the bus. There are two main bus stops for long distance buses in Positano, one at each end of town. They are some way apart so it pays to know which to get off at.

Private Driver. Money very well spent!

Private driver - maybe but I'd rather spend the money on an extra night. We took train Rome to Naples to Sorrento then bus to Positano and it was pretty painless. And should be quieter in April. The coast road was clogged with traffic but that wouldn't have been easier in a car - and in fact a car would be adding to the traffic.

As blueeyedcod says, the ferry from Salerno would be pretty relaxing if there is one at a time that suits, and especially if you're not staying at the very top of Positano.

Seeing Positano from the water was wonderful. if available I would highly recommend the ferry.
