Zerlina thanks! I was so focused on avoiding the April 25 Liberation Day holiday that I moved the trip forward a week, forgetting that we would be there on May 1. But no matter, as we can plan to stay in Amalfi on that day. We will make certain to book our trip to Paestum, and to make our trip to Pompeii, in the earlier part of that week.

We were planning to spend the weekend in Naples; I would guess that many people will leave the city, not descend upon it, for that long weekend. Do you agree?
I have not booked my hotel in Naples yet so will get busy on that soon.

I think you're right: Probably more people will leave Naples than will go there, the opposite of what I would expect for "hot spots" like Rome, Florence, Venice - or the Amalfi Coast.

Many thanks, Zerlina. I posed a similar query on a new thread.....take a look if you have the time.

Where do you live, if you don't mind my asking?

I'm a little confused....

Someone mentioned to get to Pompeii we would go to Meta (what is that??) not Sorrento, but return via Sorrento on the way back.

Why wouldn't we go from Positano to Sorrento on the way out, then train/bus to Pompeii??

Our first stop on our trip is Capri for 3 nights. Do we need to make advance ferry reservations? What about for our return to Positano? Do we need to book ahead?

I've read that the ferries don't run when the weather is choppy. How would we get to Positano for our week there? Would we just have to wait it out?

Hi Wanderer - META is between Positano and Sorrento - about 25 mins. from Positano on the Sorrento bus.

Meta is the nearest railway station to Positano on the Circumvesuviana line - so is convenient for Pompeii (- or Ercolano). The bus stops at Meta station.

Here's a map:
http://www.supermappe.com/campania/meta.html

Catching the train from Meta rather than Sorrento usually saves half an hour.

N.B. On the return journey to Positano, however, it's advisable to take the train from Pompeii back to SORRENTO (- rather than changing at Meta) - to guarantee yourself a seat on the Positano bus.

[Positano buses often leave Sorrento full (- so for anyone boarding at Meta it's standing room only ]

...

You don't need an advance reservations to Capri - ferries and hydrofoils are very frequent between Naples and Capri.

Capri-Positano departures are late afternoon. It's advisable to book in Capri one day in advance.

If the Positano service is cancelled due to choppy seas you can always take the boat to Sorrento. This is rarely cancelled as it's a larger ferry - and Sorrento has a sheltered port (- unlike Positano).

Hope this helps ...

HI ek,

We were very pleased with Cuomo.

Ira: Unless my memory is failing me, there are two Cuomos recomended here, Rosario and Renato. Are they related and working for the same company? Which did you use? Was he a person who would be fun to spend an entire day with?
