How do we get mail in Italy
Leaving for Italy/Greece/Spain for next three months. How do we arrange to pick up mail - American Embassys??? Thanks for help.
|
Do your senders know how to make a paper airplane? If they throw real hard - - there's a chance it might make it to you.

Otherwise, hey, c'e Italia!
Il Postino?

Since we live in a global world, why on earth do you want snail mail? all your bills, etc , accounts can be done electronically, so can mail from home, its called email!!!! Do not send YOUR mail to the US Embassy. The mail they get is for their staff, it is not their responsibility to process your mail. If for some bizarre reason you must do this go to an AMerican Express Office and buy a mail box from them. You will have to do this in every country you visit. TRy viewing their website about fees, access to your mail hours, etc. The real topic here isn't "how do we get mail in ITaly" but WHY????

The other way to do it, and I presume this works worldwide, as I've done it in about 6 or 7 countries.... is to find out the address of the main post office in a town/city, and have it mailed there, addressed as follows:

Your name
POSTE RESTANTE
Address of Post Office

Then you can pick it up when you get there. HOWEVER, they will only hold it for a limited amount of time, and will not forward on (in my experience.)

Hope that helps somewhat,
Jenny

To Rex and xxx - not everything can be handled with computers. Pardon me for asking!!!
FYI a credit card has not been received, and needs to be mailed to us. You cannot fax that.
To Jenny: thanks for your straightforward and useful reply.

OOps forgot "aussies" don't have a sense of humor,do forgive any attempts at levity.
|
So you are going to have a credit card sent to a address that has been posted on the internet...way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!as for the original post it said mail for three months, not need something that is vitally important to be safeguarded and mailed to me at a secure location.

I find it hard to believe that a credit card company is going to mail a credit card to a general delivery type of mail box in a foreign country. I just checked with mine( did this online of course), and they would not mail it to the above address, it needs to be specific and secure. They suggested an American Express Store and no it is not their card. The original posters address should be two dummyaussies@....

Just curious, two aussies since you are Australians, it is a bit presumptous to assume that the American Embassy would do any thing for you. Try your own nationalitys' embassy to see what type of services you are entitled to while traveling overseas...
|
Forgive my irreverence. My comment wasn't really about the "irrelevance" of (snail) mail in today's world. Mail is still important. I used to do a lot of business that involved mail both to and from Italy.

My comment was directed at the unpredictability of delivery of mail IN Italy.

Have you inquired with regard to the Australian Embassy in Rome? Or are you not actual Australian nationals?
Jean,
Issuers of credit cards will not validate a new credit card issued by them until the person that requested and receives the card dials an 800 number from their home telephone number. It then becomes validated. I don't think yours will work.
|
Yes, your post was misleading - but for the credit card - couldn't you email the address of your hotel to whoever has the credit card, and get them to Fedex it? Let the hotel know you are expecting a Fedex package (not what is in it!).
|
To set matters straight - it is possible to be Australian and hold a U.S. passport. It is our understanding that as holders of U.S. passports, regardless of birthplace, the American Embassy is the place to turn to in times of trouble.
I certainly did not expect to be berated like this.

NO-ONE expects the Fodor's inquisition....
|
And how is your inability to plan for mail on an extended trip the US Embassy problems? do us all a favor and leave the state department alone, they are not the cause of your poor planning regarding a replacement credit card for a trip that you haven't even started. Why not get your card at home and know that it is safe and secure and most of all active... and then take your trip?
