Personally I rather enjoy sitting in the comfort of a train zipping thru Italian countryside. Eurostar train between Milan-Rome takes 4 hrs, 30 minutes versus flying which I'm guestimating takes about 45 minutes. However you do have to get to airport an hour before departure, and if flying out of Malpensa, another 45 minutes to get from city to the airport (Linate airport is closer). As for cost, 1st class on ES train is 67 Euros and 2nd class, 46 Euros.
