How Did You Find Out About Fodors Travel Talk?

I was on another travel website and someone at my workplace mentioned the odd characters over at fodors.com. This was intriguing to me so I came over to take a peek and became peeky.
I enjoy reading the trip reports most of all.
How did you come across Fodors, and when?

I found the sight when researching a trip to Italy in 2002 and have been addicted since, like most on this board.
Welcome.

I found it while researching for a trip and reading other travel boards. I am definitely hooked -- I read the board several times a day.

I found it just about a year ago when we started planning our first Paris trip. It came up on an internet search. Hooked ever since!

Not a clue -- it is shrouded in mists ... but when I arrived in 1997 I seem to have stayed

I think it was 1996. I was looking at a Fodor's guide in a local bookstore and saw the Web site at the bottom of the front cover. Have been hooked ever since.

For me it all started with Frommers. About a year and a half ago I went to that web page to research a trip to Belgium and found Frommers message board. I read a lot of good stuff about other countries on that board, but they didn't have as much info on Belgium as I needed. That's when I remembered another travel book called Fodors and wondered if they had a message board. I looked up Fodors and the rest is history. I immediately liked this board better than Frommers because people here seem to know each other, on some level anyway. Before joining Fodors I thought I knew so much about travel, yet I have learned more from the Fodorites than I ever would have imagined. Also I enjoy the threads where we don't learn as much, but we all have a good laugh.

Mine is similar to P_M, except then when I wasn't getting many responses on Frommer's I asked if there was a better way to get more information (I was researching Turkey at the time) and someone on Frommers suggested Fodors. I don't think I've been back to Frommers in several years now.

Ok, I was about to answer this when I saw Patricks post. I'd been on Frommers board (since I'd used Frommer's books before) about 3 years ago when I came across a thread asking where the OP could find other travel forums.

It may well have been Patrick's thread, actually.

I really cannot remember, maybe because of an article in the Travel Section of the SF Chronical? Odd Characters? What could they have possibly meant!

and, yes, I'm an addict now too whenever I'm on "hold" at work! Sometimes that is a long time too!

Back in 1997, USAToday's website listed a top-ten website article, and Fodor's was listed. I've been checking in every day since, although under another name before registration...

There re at least two threads with this question (sort of) asked on which I and others have posted some answers before, if you want to see some "then and now" comparisons and contrasts.

http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...mp;tid=1309304 (July 2001)

and

Best wishes,

Same as many others, researching a trip in 2002. I was also relatively new to the internet at the time and this was the first time I EVER posted on a messageboard. I've not only learned so much about travel but have had computer help and learned so much on other subjects here. It is a community. This morning I was reading a Happy Chanukah thread and learned about pelemi.

I was researching a trip in 1999 and was on another board but for various reasons got a different ISP and couldn't access that board anymore so went looking for a new one. Frommers is kind of boring, and actually I was thinking about leaving that other board anyway...it got to be a mess..you only THINK you have tolls on this board..this board is fun but also you get good info here so it's been good. I actually see some of the posters from that "other board" over here now and then.

Can not recall exact date but many years ago. In fact, when I first found it it was so crude that often the posting function did not (function that is)....and along the same line, who all has one of the Fodor pins that were sent out. Mine is safely tucked away.
