How best to spend a long day in Warnemunde
 

My wife & I are going on a Baltic cruise in August, & are visiting Warnemunde (Baltic coast of Germany) for a long day (c 14 hours), but don’t fancy the trip to Berlin. I would very much welcome member’s views on the best local things to see / do for the day. Is Rostock worth a visit, & if so what are the highlights there. Many thanks John O'

Warnemunde is pleasant if the weather is nice (great beach) and has a few nice shops and an enjoyable promenade for strolling (but 14 hours is a bit long unless you are beach people http://www.rostock.de/en/warnemuende.html ).

Rostock isn't super exciting - - it doesn't have a lively, inviting center so much as a few interesting sights: http://www.rostock.de/en/holiday-leisure/sights.html

It's 90 minutes to Luebeck by train from Rostock - - a really worthwhile "brick Gothic" city on an island; you could even stop in Wismar on the way but it's easy to spend a full day in Luebeck.

Another hop-around by train would be 55 minutes to Stralsund; from there it would be another hour by train to Binz on the island of Rügen http://www.rostock.de/en/holiday-leisure/day-trips.html .

Either one would mean less travel and would be less hectic than heading to Berlin.

A Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ticket for two, good for all day travel on Regional trains all through those areas, is 27 Euro.

My wife's cousin lives in Lübeck and is here with us right now.

Some interesting things to see and to do in Lübeck:

- The Holstentor is a most impressive medieval city gate and Lübeck's landmark.

- The Old Town has preserved it's medieval layout. See squares, streets, courtyards and picturesque back alleys lined with historical buildings.

- The City Hall, built from 1230, is a magnificent visit.

- Around the Old Town, there are the ports of Lübeck, still with many historic ships lying there. Especially the Passat is worth a visit.

- There are several historic churches in Lübeck. Also the Heilig-Geist-Hospital is an interesting sight.

- Have lunch in the Schiffergesellschaft, a historic tavern that is like a living museum. But do not take a dessert there. Instead:

- Visit Niederegger Café. Niederegger is Lübeck's largest producer of marzipan, and the store is a wonderful collection of sweets which are made from marzipan. Also, the café has wonderful delicacies made from marzipan. And if you are not hungry, try a coffee, hot chocolate or tea with marzipan! Needless to say, this is a good place for souvenir shopping.

We took the train to Lubeck for the day. You'll have plenty of time as the Berlin people don't get back until late, like 9pm.

A month ago we took the train from Warnemunde to Rostock (15-20 min) and then changed trains and went to Schwerin (80 min train ride). Nice town, it has a very large mall and it was a 15 minute walk to Schwerin Castle which we enjoyed. Came back and walked along promenade near the ship parking and there were old ships and lots of vendors selling food and drink. Enjoy!!!

We particularly enjoyed strolling around Altar Strom, & also fitted in a visit to Rostock. A good alternative to a long journey to Berlin. John O'
