Hourly internet availability in London
 

I need recommendation for internet cafe near
Marble Arch. The business center in my hotel is
really pricey. Many thanks.

There is a kitschy tourist crap shop on the north side of Oxford street a few doors east of the Tube station. They have internet downstairs for 1€ a half-hour, which they will waive if you buy some kitschy tourist crap upstairs. I got the Union Jack baseball cap.

There are something like 16 easyeverything internet cafes. One must be somewhat convenient to Marble Arch, perhaps the one on Oxford Street.

Easy Internet Cafe -- It's a chain in London. I used one at Trafalgar Square and opposite the Kensington High Street Station. 2L an hour. I'm sure they have a website with locations.

There's definitely one opposite Bond St tube station.

Not to nit-pick, Robes, but did you mean one pound rather than one euro? I'm only asking because I'm going to London soon. I might get one of those caps myself, then spend some time with Fodors. :-)

Look for an EasyInternet Cafe - it is a chain of Internet Cafes run by the same guys that do EasyJet. It's great; they are everywhere in Europe and very easy to use and relatively cheap. These are the locations in the UK http://www.easyinternetcafe.com/map/index_uk.html

Or if you have a laptop with wireless internet, you can just buy a coffee in one of these dreadful (characterless, "place of our times" fads) coffee shops and use their wireless internet for free.

Could one tell me where one might be able to find these free internet places. The ones I've looked up online all seem to have a fee.

lol...I can use my PDA to detect the network... I should have asked where I might find a network that was intended to be used for free. Then again, it isn't a bad strategy if there are as many unsecured networks in London as there are in my neighborhood.

Do you use NetStumbler or something like that? I couldn't make it work on either my laptop or PPC.

If it is relevant the Cafe Nero near Selfridges is smoke free - which I appreciated. Internet is not free but was much cheaper than my hotel. I guess the fact that it was not free would mean that Cafe Nero is not one of those "dreadful coiffeehouses" to which MK2 referred!

I'm not that sophisitcated since I don't usually wander around sniffing. If I'm someplace where I think I might be able to get on line then I use the PDA. Basically I just turn the PDA wireless on and look at the site survey. If I can find an available network that's not locked down and grab an IP with the PDA, then I'll haul out the laptop.

I think MK2 was, with great delicacy, trying to avoid saying St*rb*cks.
