Hotels with views

Hi All,

My husband and I are planning a trip to Paris and Venice in May end/June beginning.
I wanted some suggestions for good hotels that have rooms with views in both these places. Our budget is $200/day. I was searching the web and came up with Du Quai Voltaire in Paris which apparently has a breathtaking view of Siene and Louvre. Has anyone stayed here? Please let me know.

Thanks
Dee

One of the warnings about staying in the Voltaire in a room with a view is the street noise. The hotel is right on the street overlooking the Seine.
We picked an apt this trip so we would have a view of the Eiffel Tower..there are some hotels in the 7th with amazing views. I can check my list if you need names..

Hi Scarlett,
Thanks for your response. I would greatly appreciate it if you can chek your list for names.

Also, how is the quality of the rooms in Voltaire? Are the sheets/bathroom clean? Is the noise from the street as bad even on a higher floor ?

Thanks so much,
Dee

I've stayed at Hotel Du Quai Voltaire twice and really like it. If noise is a concern they have rooms at the back which are cheaper and quieter but have no views.

if you get a room on the top two floors the noise isn't much - never kept me awake for instance. And the view is wonderful up there. Standing in your window you can see from Place de la Concorde all the way to a bit of Notre Dame. You can wave at the folks on the Batteaux floating by on the river and of course all of the Louvre is directly across the river. I imagine the noise on the lower floors/riverside would be noisy though.

The hotel is only a 2 star - but I really don't know why it doesn't rate 3 star - it has an elevator, a nice library/lounge, a bar/Breakfast room, and the breakfasts are OK which is fairly unusual @ moderate Paris hotels. I stil prefer going to a cafe or having a crepe on the street, but b'fast in the hotel is a decent option.

You can leave your room on an upper floor, get downstairs and across the river to the Pyramid in 3 or 4 minutes.

Most people working the front desk speak perfect English, and I found everyone very helpful.

It is also very close to Musee D'orsay and w/i easy walking distance to both islands and most of the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th and 7th.

There are other terrific moderate hotels all over Paris - but the Du Quai Voltaire is just fine

In all my gushing I forgot to answer your questions about cleanliness, etc. I've been in a single and a very large twin. The single was small but had the same terrific view. The twin was large by Paris standards and had a very nice bathroom w/ an additional french window.

I peeked into several rooms on the two top floors and each was different - size and decor. But each of the double/twins I saw were decorated nicely and a couple were downright posh.

Personally never had any housekeeping/cleanliness issues.

Thanks so much for your response, janis. Any of the other hotels that you would recommend?

We enjoyed the Hotel Ala in Venice. It is located on a small canal and the views are exactly what I had pictured Venice to be. The hotel has a gondola dock off the lobby and boats with singing gondoliers pass all day and into the evening. In addition to a charming outlook, the hotel is great with excellent service.

Well - you can probably get other more useful recs from other fodorites. Except for Voltaire or a flat - the last hotel I used in Paris was several years ago so my info would be pretty out of date. There are lots of posters here who travel to Paris a lot more than I do.

I last stayed at Hotel du Quai Voltaire about 18 months ago.

One problem you may have is that your title is not very clear. "Hotels with views" could be asking about anywhere in Europe. In fact I only opened your thread in the first place because I thought you might be asking about the UK and it was just a happy accident that I know the very hotel you were asking about.

You might consider posting a new thread with a title something like "Hotels w/ views in Paris and Venice?" and you might get a lot more response.
