Hotels Smeraldo & La Rovere in Rome

Have any of you stayed at the Hotel Smeraldo or Hotel La Rovere in Rome? I'm also interested in the neighborhoods surrounding these hotels. Any good restaurants, enotecas, shops, etc.? I'm especially curious about the La Rovere since I haven't been able to find anything on the net about that area (south of the Vatican, northern edge of Trastevere). Many thanks in advance!

I stayed at the Smeraldo. I would recommend it as one of the best value properties in the Renaissance district of Rome. It's a simple hotel, but clean. It won't cost you much compared to other hotels. The neighborhood is great and location is convenient to Piazza Navona, Piazza del Pantheon, Campo dei Fiori, Palazzo Farnese, Largo Argentina, and even the Vatican. There is some street noise which permeates into the rooms owing to the fact that there are several shops, cafes and bakeries in the immediate vicinity. The hotel is along an alleyway (Vicolo dei Chiodaroli) as it intersects Via dei Chiavari, 400 yards south of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. There are buses along the Corso going from the Vatican to Termini Train Station.

Definitely the Smeraldo. I've stayed in both the the Smeraldo is more convenient (near the Campe de Fiore - I think I'm mispelling this, the Piazza Novena etc. with lots of good restaurants, pizzerias etc. Also the rooms have private baths/toilets. The Rovere while nicely run had no private toilets when I was there and although the staff tried hard some heavy drinking guys (a grouP) kept messing it up. That might not happen again and I don't want to bad mouth the place but it is less convenient.

We stayed at the Smeraldo in July. It was plain, but clean and in a great location. The desk staff spoke English and was helpful. We'd stay there again.

Hi,

WE stayed at the Smeraldo a year ago April and liked the area very much. Some great bread stores nearby(memorble panini), nice open market to buy fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, etc. Walking distance to everything.
As for the hotel our room was decent. Apparently half of the rooms were being renovated with nice marble floors, new windows and new baths. Even though we booked early they didn't give us one of the new rooms which aggravated me. Our room was a bit noisy also. I found the staff aloof, but helpful when pressed. I would stay there again, but ask for a renovated room (which they may all be by now).

My husband and I really enjoyed Hotel Smeraldo back in May 1998. I was supposed to return there this November, but I will not head to Rome on this trip. I had gotten a quote of 200.000L per night, which is a very good price. This hotel is in a very good location as the others have mentioned. We never took any transportation once we got there from Termini on the bus. We walked every where! Please see my travel page on my trip. You can go to the hotel section as well as the restaurant section. One restaurant near Campo Farnese was very good.
