I wouldn't consider the 4* Rubens to be "basic". However, it does meet all your other criteria.

Also in that area is the Thistle Westminster and right at the station is the Thistle Victoria. Both of these hotels would be cheaper than the Rubens.

Check out the hotels listed on londontown.com near Victoria Station:

What is your budget? We need a # to be able to give any sort of useful recommendations.

The Rubens at the Palace is terrific - but in no way can it be called "basic", nor budget.

Hoping for something in the $200 - $250 area - problem seems to be finding 1 room for 3 adults. We don't want to spend $250 x 2.

We will be coming from Dover by rail & going to Heathrow the next day for a morning flight. The Victoria area seemed like a good choice, but suggestions are very welcome.

Try the Luna and Simone http://www.lunasimonehotel.com/

Their triples run £90 - £110. It is very popular and books up so I'd contact them soon . . .

It sounds like you only need a place to sleep and shower. That was the same thing that happened to us too. We decided not to spend that much $$$ and opted for easyhotel.com. There are 4 of us, we booked 2 rooms and are only paying 70 pounds or $150 for the 2. Can't beat that since it just for 1 night.

easyHotel? That depends - does your definition of "basic" include no windows, no closets or drawers - just 3 hooks on the wall, 7 sq. meters, and bright orange decor?

For the 3 of you, you'd have to get 2 rooms - so easyHotel is not that much cheaper than other places.

We stayed at the B&B Belgravia two years ago and really liked it. I think they may have a family room that could accommodate 3 people.

I am following through on all suggestions - love the help on Fodors.

One other question: We are coming from Dover (cruise) & spending one night in London before an afternoon flight from Heathrow. We want to avoid the tube & dragging luggage up/down stairs. Would it be easier to find the sort of hotel we want near the Paddington station since we'll leave from there for Heathrow?

We've been to London several times
before, so we don't have to be in any particular area for sightseeing purposes.

Again - thanks!

Why do you want to leave for LHR from Paddington? Since there are 3 of you - a car service from any central London hotel will be cheaper than 3 train fares.

We've always used trains to get to the airport - thought that taxis/ or other such transport would be more expensive + trains don't have traffic issues. Where can I find info about car svcs to consider?

Thanks!

Have also stayed at B&B Belgravia, and it's a good place, & well located - but it doesn't have a lift (elevator). So if you stay there, and don't want to hump luggage, take care you don't get a room on a high floor 'cos the stairs are steep and narrow.

Since your flight is in the afternoon, you might have an issue with rush-hour traffic. A quick trip on the Tube might be preferable, stairs and luggage notwithstanding.

You could take the South Eastern train to Kings Cross and avoid the cross-town trek. Find a hotel in the area, and ride the Piccadilly Line straight to LHR.
