I'm with tuscanlifeedit on this. We used taxis more on our trip to Paris last year than any earlier visit. Just one of the gray-haired realities we now face. ;)

Pepper does not have it right. There are good reasons for avoiding the metro other than being overweight and/or out of shape. Like mobility issues. I recently spent six weeks in the UK, after medication finally got some health problems under control. By the fourth week I was having great difficulty with stairs. That had nothing to do with my weight, which was actually lower than when I used to head happily down to the tube/metro. Nor did it have anything to do with being pampered, as in London I used buses instead of the tube. Don't jump to judgement with insufficient data.

We've stayed at Hotel Left Bank several times.
One of their room types, standard, is not large but has something very few rooms have. A lot of drawer space.
10 minutes in one direction to the Seine and the museums. Ten minutes the other way to Lumxenburg Gardens. Next door to Procope restaurant. Metro right at the corner. Half a block from Sainte Germain.

For more than a few days I'd call and negotiate a price. But first look up their web site so you know what you are negotiating from.

@kerouac - unfortunately (or I suppose fortunately for some) chronological age and physical age are not well correlated. And 66 is still young! I was doing much better five years ago when I was 66, but my 82 year old sister is currently doing much better than I am.

I am not overweight or out of shape, so most of the time I am pretty happy touring around on airplanes and trains, though every trip seems more horrible than the last (I do agree that the métro in Paris has become a PITA in recent years), but I vastly prefer to spend the euros I have on going to more places and spending less money than going to fewer places and treating myself. I don't need luxury. I need sights and sounds and experiences. I have a really nice house and a really comfy bed at home. I don't need to line a hotel's pocket for luxury when I'm traveling. Just my take on things. A lot of people have a lot more money than I do, so that figures into the equation, too. I have never spent USA$300 a night on a hotel. Not sure I suffered for having not done so, either.

@StCirq - me too, but we have the luxury of time. Someone who only has a couple of weeks of vacation has different priorities. And we all have diiferent tastes in any case. I travel light and budget, and would feel uncomfortable in a five star hotel. Someone else might dislike the pensions and B&Bs I prefer, never mind the Premier Inn chain I was pleased to finally use on my last trip.

I would not wait too long. Rooms in May with enough room to turn around for two people and in a good location are in relatively short supply. Especially under 300 Euro per night. Be sure to check for elevators if going with a less expensive property. I made the mistake of booking a non-elevator lodging in Lisbon this past October and it really was a PITA, because the second floor is really the third floor...To avoid street noise, I prefer to stay on upper floors, also.

I would book something that can be cancelled now, and then continue to look around.

At this stage in your lives, as my parents used to say, "What are we saving it for?" Might as well be comfortable.

I just randomly clicked on this hotel site and although I'm not planning a trip to Paris anytime soon, I would consider it just to stay at this hotel. It looks beautiful, historic and not a cookie cutter place. Has anyone stayed here. It gets good reviews on Trip Advisor.

Many years ago we stayed at the Hotel Suez. It's on Blvd. St Michel, a mere block or so from the St. Michel Metro stop which is direct to CDG Airport. The Cluny Museum, Louvre, Notre Dame, Luxembourg Gardens, all within a jump of the place. Now, it's been awhile, so I can't speak to how things are these days. And while on a busy Blvd., just ask for a room toward the back or the side. It has a tiny elevator. Not the fanciest place, but location is superb. And how much time will you spend in there, anyway? Just a thought... :-)

Paris is replete with hotels that will fit your requirements. The Metro is fantastic. I recommend finding a hotel you love and using Metro to get within two blocks of where you want to be for touring.

I recently stayed at Le Dokhan's in the 16th with two very close Metro stops. We didn't use an Uber our entire trip, despite my knee blow-out on the way to the airport in Chicago before we even took off.

We stated at the Albany St James, almost across from the Louvre twice, wonderful hotel and location, but you would have to see if it's in your price range. Both times we got great specials, as it was in off season.

The Hotel Aida Opera was great, for the price. I have usually stayed in this area. Arrived Sunday around 8 am, no problelms with demonstrations, left early Sat, Thanks again Feel sorry for all the small business's they may not be able to recover. Happy New Year from Central Pennsylvania, USA

Was this the one you traveled with a 62 and a 64-year olds? I would love to read your trip report. Some of the most entertaining trip reports are of this type. :-( :-) Info on what not to do is as useful as what to do.

More than 20 visits to Paris - and I’ve never spent 250-300 euros on a room , and I always stay central and I always get a hotel with ac , often a mini fridge ( I like to stock it with drinks and snacks ) .

OP - If you have a good budget then yes there are some very good hotels suggested here , but please do not accept that you MUST spend that kind of money to get a clean and central hotel - you do NOT .

Are you looking for a larger American style hotel - or would a smaller one suit you ?

Also as someone else pointed out get that room booked soon - I just booked for my June visit this year and many of my places I like are getting full !

I don't think the OP is under some delusion that you HAVE to spend that money in Paris. Why would they be, that's kind of a patronizing comment. The fact is that is not an unusually high budget for some parts of Paris in peak season, especially St Germain. They want this to be a special trip. And being a larger "American style hotel", whatever that means (as if Europeans don't have large hotel chains, not sure what the American part means) is not necessarily related to price. Some of the most expensive hotels in St Germain are small ones. Some people actually want more than a "clean" hotel, which is a pretty low bar.

nanabee, sorry, I have not stayed at the Jeu de Paume, just have heard a lot about it over the years so thought it would fit the criteria of a special trip, central location, nice hotel.
