Hotels in Vienna
I was reading about the Palais Coburg--has anyone stayed there? What is your favorite hotel in Vienna?? Thanks. jan

We typically stay @ the Hotel Astoria. It has a great location in the Ped. Zone & is right down the street from some of the best ice cream in the world.

I stayed at Pension Pertschy and was very pleased. The price was great given the location, on a quiet street right off of Graben and within walking distance of the Hofburg, St. Stephens and the Stephensdom metro stop. The rooms are nice and fairly large, and the breakfast was very good.

LOL, if someone is considering the Palais Coburg, then the Pension Pertschy (nice as it is) probably won't fit the bill.
http://www.palais-coburg.com/html_en/start1.php My husband and I plan to spend our 20th anniversary in Vienna and the Residenz of the Palais Coburg is at the top of our short list of hotels. The PC Residenz is in a class by itself, but of Vienna's 5-star hotels (that I've stayed in), my favorite is the Grand, followed by the Imperial. Le Meridien is the current Trip Advisor 4 star favorite, but I spent a week there last year and just wasn't that impressed. These "design" hotels are now a dime a dozen and it felt very bland, plus the bathroom shower was just plain annoying. If your taste runs to modern rather than traditional, then IMO the Style Hotel makes a better choice (one web site listed it as part of the Radisson chain, is that true?). Unlike the other 5-star hotels in Vienna, I don't think the PC Residenz offers much in the way of special rates (like I found for the Grand) or is something you can get with "points" (like the Bristol), so most people pay the rack rates. But it would be a wonderful splurge. |
I've only been to Vienna once but also stayed at Pension Pertschy- based on references from this site. We also were very pleased with the facility, food, service, and location can't be beat.

LOL BTilke.... I have no idea what kind of hotel the Palais Coburg even is! I just say the "favorite hotel in Vienna" part and posted my reply. It would have been more helpful if the OP would have given a price range.

I stayed at the Sacher, and have to say it was probably the nicest room that I've stayed in anywhere, ever. The location is great: across from the Staatsopera, next to the pedestrianized Kartnerstrasse, the Albertina, etc. The staff really seemed to go out of their way to help us navigate the city.

Tracy, I wasn't putting down the PP, because it is a very nice place and Fodorite favorite, but the Residenz at the Palais Coburg is on a completely different scale. The owners spent 85 million euros on renovation and the smallest rooms start at around $550 per night (no discounts); prices quickly escalate to the "if you have to ask..." category. In fact, the manager has said that he prefers to keep the hotel far less than full so guests can receive all the individual (and costly) attention they want. *IF* we want to spend a few nights there for our 20th anniversary two years down the road, we have to start saving now ;-)
Perhaps the OP could come back and let us know if that's the type of hotel he/she wants or just looking for a pleasant, comfortable place to stay in a good location. |
Thank you all for your suggestions--I really do appreciate all of your help. The Palais Coburg is really calling--Vienna is such a beautiful city--I am trying to justify the cost of the Residenz--has anyone stayed there?? Thanks again. Jan

I have only been to Vienna once and stayed at the Roemischer Kaiser, a small, luxury hotel a block from the Kartnerstrasse. I got a great rate on Travelocity. My room was spacious and beautiful, the service was excellent and a nice buffet breakfast was included.

I walked by the Resideny Coburg about an hour ago and popped in for a look around. They were very nice. The place is spectacular. If you want a memorable splurge, this is a good choice. Won't work for us though as no dogs allowed; we'll have to stay at the Grand...
