Hotels in Rouen, France

We are going to Rouen in December and are wondering if anyone knows of a good, moderatly priced hotel? Additionally, anything we should not miss in Rouen?

Last fall we stayed at Le Clos Jouvenet, a nice B&B, one the best around, but I don't know if they will be open on your dates. You'll have to check with Madame De Witte.

There was a small piece on Rouen in the NY Times Travel Section recently (travel.nytimes.com/2013/08/11/travel/near-paris-a-city-of-flaubert-and-joan-of-arc.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0) , and the following is from a newsletter iberiantraveler.com/Haute_Normandie.pdf:

THE HIGHLIGHTS OF ROUEN, CAPITAL OF HAUTE-NORMANDIE
Its atmospheric old quarter, Vieux Rouen, is filled with highly picturesque half-timbered homes, and a fine Musée de Beaux Arts, richly endowed with the Impressionist masterpieces of Monet, Sisley, Pissarro and Renoir. Its Ceramic Museum is devoted to 17th and 18th century Rouen faïence, decorated earthenware. You’ll also find the great abbey church of St-Ouen in Vieux Rouen and of course the sights associated with Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc), patron saint of France, who was tried for witchcraft and burned at the stake in the city’s historic market square in 1431.

Some of the finest church architecture in France can be found in Rouen, in particular its cathedral, one of Europe’s finest Gothic masterpieces, whose west façade Monet painted 28 times in his studies of changing light. The 16th century stain glass windows of Eglise Sainte Jeanne d’Arc Rouen, salvaged from the original church of Saint Vincent, severely damaged in 1944, are magnificent.

We stayed across the river at the Novotel, which was good value for the money. However, finding it was a challenge; we went back and forth across the Seine first on one of the 7 bridges, than another, and another, and another.

That's what happens in Rouen. It's still amazing!!!

I stayed in the Hotel Morand. It is $91 for a double room on Expedia. No elevator, smallish room and bathroom, but great breakfast facility, common areas, and run by a real nice couple speaking perfect English. About 5 minutes walk from the Cathedral and overall not a bad choice.

Look at the tourist office website since they'll list most, if not all, of the hotels/accommodation in Rouen:

Thank you, everyone.
Now, are there any other nearby villages to visit while in Rouen?

I think Honfleur is charming, and it isn't that far away. Are you going to have a car? Because then there would be no problem, it would only be a bit over an hour's drive. By train, not sure it would be that easy, you might have to go through Paris (or to Le Havre and then a bus). There may be buses from Rouen.

I stayed at the Inter-Hotel Notre Dame in Rouen for 3 nights in August. It was reasonably priced and you get what you paid for. We were out for most of the days so we only needed somewhere to sleep. It's not the poshest of places but its clean and tidy, and just down the street from the cathedral.

I would also recommend a visit to Honfleur :)

The Impressionist wing of the Musee des Beaux Artes is really special, we think.
Also going out of Rouen toward Honfleur is the Abbey Road--a string of medieval abbeys in various states of ruin or repair. They are a wonderful half day or so to visit as you go. Get the Green Guide to Normandy and it is described there. You drive along a high ridge.
