hotels in rome
 

my husband and I will be coming from florence to rome at the end of april. we are looking for help and input on hotels in rome for 5 nites, hopefully near the spanish steps. we have heard about the Inn at the spanish steps, has anyone got info on this hotel or any others. we are both seniors, but very active.
any recommendations would be appreciated.

You have not indicated your budget and what you will be interested in doing while in Rome, nor your previous experience in Rome, if any. Giving this sort of information will guide responders toward a hotel that would best fit your goals.

That said, my wife and I had good experience with the Hotel Modigliani. It is smallish, has an elevator, excellently helpful English speaking staff, and an excellent included breakfast. They are on a quit street a block off the Via Veneto near the Piazza Barberini, the Metro and many bus routes, about 5 min walk to the Spanish Steps. I found it from a recommendation on this site while planning our May 2012 trip, a long report of which is available by clicking my screen name. It was about 200 euro a night, before a 10% Rick Steves discount. We got the least expensive room class, although the superior rooms were bigger.

DD and I stayed at the Domus Julia, a nice little apt/hotel, just below the Barberini Palace and very near the Spanish Steps, at via Rasella 32. It adjoins the Hotel Julia, where breakfast is served and you have a front desk if you have questions.

While in Rome, I picked up cards from these nearby hotels, which looked very nice, but also more expensive than our Domus Julia:



La Lumiere di Piazza di Spagna (Spanish steps), has rooftop dining, is in an old mansion on Condotti street. More expensive than our Hotel Julia, I'm sure. www.lalumieredipiazzadispagna.com.

Well, if I could stay at any hotel NEAR the Spanish Steps it would be the de Russie.

I also love the Hassler because all kinds of kookie heiresses stay there and it is fun to watch them fall off the chairs in the bar after too much Krug.

The de Russie has the most beautiful garden.

I have walked past the Modigliani. It is a small, quiet hotel just off the Via Sistina.

A really nice street near the Spanish Steps is the Via Margutta.

Phylle, you certainly have many options mentioned to you. The Inn at the Spanish Steps is a member of the "Small Luxury Hotels of the World" and generally gets solid reviews.

The POOR reviews come into play when the hotel is full and you get shuffled - or you book into the "auxiliary" or annex rooms.

These are in a separate building - UNDER no circumstances do you want to be in this part of the hotel... SO BOOK DIRECTLY with the hotel - and request this OR work with a travel advisor to book this for you. Don't book through a 3rd party site like booking.com or Expedia as you will probably end up in the annex... and that's just a different experience for most folks.

The hotel also works with JDB (as do I) and they can often get you enhanced amenities at the same price. So check with your travel advisor.

If your budget is big enough then certainly the Hassler, Portrait Suites or the Rocco Fortr Hotel de Russie are wonderful options. All are virtuoso hotels, so if you work through a Virtuoso Advisor you can get enhanced amenities like free breakfasts, a possible free room upgrade, a $100 spa credit or a free restaurant option (Offers are different in each hotel). All of these hotels are quite close to the Spanish Steps.

At the top of the steps is the less expensive Intercontinental De La Ville. It is also a Virtuoso hotel so you'd get additional complimentary amenities there.

Based on your five days in the city, I'd stay in the central, downtown area to maximize your visit. You can always take a day trip to Tivoli or Ostia. Good luck on your trip!
