two couples in mid 50's looking for a reasonable priced hotel in Rome in walking distance to major sites. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I think you will get better responses if you specify what you consider a reasonable price. Also, how long will you be staying? If for an extended period there are lots of good apartment options

Well on our last visit we stayed at Hotel Lancelot which we liked alot BUT except for the Coliseum it was a bit far from the other sights. I suggest you look on Tripadvisor or www.venere.com for ALOT of options. Venere has a feature where you can chose the part of the city to narrow down your choices. But I'm sure you'll get more suggestions here as well. Have a nice trip!

I too suggest that if you will be in Rome 3 or more days you look for a two-bedroom apartment. That way you have a living room to sit and visit, and a kitchenette for light meals and for snacks and drinks. There are so many apts in Rome!! Prices depend on lots of things like the season, whether there is an elevator, location of course. You can save money by eating dinners in sometimes, and having breakfast in, too.

Go to Slow Travel and look at the apartment reviews -- and their Italy forum. Also TripAdvisor.

I too warmly suggest you to rent a double bedroom apartment which is usually way cheaper than 2 hotel's rooms. There are many rental agencies in rome so maybe is better if you check between the Slow Travel favorite (http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/listin...rites.htm#rome) and the Frommer's post (http://www.frommers.com/blog/2008/07...elers-are.html).
Mind that in rome high season start from mid march to the end of june and again from mid september to mid november, Xmas-New Year, Eastern. So if you plan to travel in these periods expect to depense from 10 to 20% more than the fare normally shown.
My 2 cents... i've recently dealt with Marco Agretti from www.RomePower.com which found us a very reasonably priced apartment (the "Gladiator") really few steps from Navona Square and Campo de' Fiori.

Personally, the last thing I want to do when traveling with another couple is share an apartment. After time together at meals and sightseeing, I want the refuge of a private spot to relax in.

ALso, when are you going? Prices do vary considerably. The best location, in my opinion, is the Navona/Pantheon/Fiori area. As far as reasonable, some think < $100/nt is and others may think $300 is. What is your range?
