Hotels in or near Obidos, Portugal?

We will be traveling from the north and work our way down to Lisbon. Does anyone have a hotel they would recommend in or near Obidos? We would stay there for one night, and leave for Lisbon the next morning.

we were happy with the Estalagem do Convento, next to the town wall. Parking plentiful alongside wall, easy access into the town at a "hole in the wall" nearby instead of steep trekking up the road to the main gate...good buffet breakfasts. If I recall, the rate for a decent sized double room (queen bed) was around $100...that was spring of '08 when € was at 1.55. Unless they've hiked up rates, at 1.40 you should get a better rate.

Have a great trip..you will love the country!

There are so many pics, you could just select from the thumbnails for Obidos, Marvao, Nazare' and Sintra...or any of the others...slide show is quite long.

Thank you, Stu. Your photo gallery helped a lot. The picture taken labeled "Coast road to Cascais", did you drive to Cascais, or take the train from Lisbon or Sintra to Cascais?

Italy_Four:

We stayed in Sintra for three nights and drove the road down the coast to Cascais on one of the days...outstanding scenery as you could see. Cabo do Roca is the westernmost point of continental Europe, hence the monument. I would suggest that you could stay in Sintra so you can visit the coast, Cascais and Estoril. Sintra alone is a good part of a day...Pena Palace, National Palace, a pretty little town....then drive into Lisbon to return your car. In two days you can see a good part of Lisbon and Belem (all by very convenient public transportation)

Hi Stu,

It sounds like the Hotel Estalagem de Convento is actually on the outside of the city wall. Do I understand you correctly that you passed through a hole in the wall for a shortcut into the village to avoid climbing up a steep hill to the main gate? Did the hotel staff give you the tip about the shortcut, or did you have to stumble across it on your own? If so, I hope they haven't sealed it up before we get there!

Were also considering Hotel Real D'Obidos, but I'm not sure which hotel would be closer to the village without steep climbing.

Well, it's not cheap but we stayed in the Pousada. It's an old castle and was wonderful. There are stairs to get to it, but the staff carried our luggage (and they drove my car inside the gate and parked it for me!) I would recommend it!

HaHa..Italy Four....it was just my facetious way of describing it...the hotel told us about it...it's actually a very narrow arched gateway. Photo #258 among the Obidos pix..my wife is standing on the other side to be sure that one of us gets in before they decide to board it up...LOL. It's only about 50 yards from the Estalagem. There are about 20 stairs leading into the heart of the town, from the opening.
A heckuva lot easier than the very steep long climb going the other way. We had stayed at three pousadas while traveling the country, all on a special senior's 40% discount deal..but the Obidos Pousada was not included, so we opted for the Estalgem. Have a great trip!

Thank you everyone for your input. I feel better now about staying at the Estalgem. We're looking forward to a great trip!
