hotels in nice?

I have been reading all the messages on this forum and haven't seen much on the South of France. I was wondering if anyone new any hotels for around $100-150 in June. I would like to stay in Nice since we will be taking day trips to Cannes and Monoco. Any other tips would be great! Thanks!

Check Hotel Flots D'Azur.

Good luck!

There have actually been several posts a day on Provence, a number of them asking for hotel recommendations in Nice. Do you want to be near the beaches, near the old part of Nice, or nearer the city center? Proximity to the beach is what tends to drive prices; so you can get more for less in different areas. I've just been looking at Nice hotel reviews at tripadvisor.com, and that's a good place to get an idea of what's available. After that you can try the various hotel sites for Nice to compare prices.

Bonjour, My family and I (4 total) stayed in Nice last summer at the Mecure, Promenade D'Anglais for 130EU a night. It is located directly across the street from the beaches, a very short walk to the old city...close to everything. Our room had a view of the park and the sea. It is pretty typical of a well-used chain hotel but we did not spend much time there as we were at the beach most of the day and out at night. It was clean and you can't beat the location (it is in the same building as Le Meridian). If you are planning to rent a car there is an Avis rental car agency in the same block - very convenient.

Please tell me more about the Mercure! We have back-up reservations there for September, but it's beginning to sound not so good.

We stayed at the Hotel Windsor in Nice last summer. It is a delightful place with a lovely garden and pool. It is conviently located. The common rooms are better than the bedrooms, but our room and bath were bigger than usual. It was 100 Euros without breakfast. Have a great time.

What do you want to know about the Mercure? It has a restaurant on the sencond level for breakfast...it is 1-2 blocks from the pedestrian zone with loads of cafes and pizza joints...it is located next to a park which had summer concerts while we were there...it is as close to the beach as you can get in nice...close to our favorite beach - Ruhl Plage. The hotel is right on the Promenade D'Anglais, great for strolling at night - but the room had double windows with small balconies and was very quiet (even with the concerts). We stayed there 2x ... once on our arrival from London and once on our return before we flew out again. We could have stayed anywhere the last nite but we chose to stay at the Mercure for several reasons - it was close to the car rental place, it was close to everything, it was in our pirce range and it was perfectly fine for our needs. It reminded me of a Holiday Inn. Nothing facny but perfect for sleeping. Anything else I can say about it?

How big was your room?

4totravel Mar 1st, 2004 03:17 AM

Well, we are a family of four and it was plenty big enough for us. There was a double bed, a single bed and they brought in a roll away bed as well. We still had plenty of room to walk around. The bathroom was average size too...full tub, etc. There was a balcony too.

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to decide whether to stay at the Mercure or splurge a bit on a standard room at La Pérouse. I really, really like nice rooms.

To Underhill: Have you looked on the website for LaPerouse for a "dollars and sense" rate? We found this last year and ended up getting an excellent deal for a standard room. We had to pay in dollars (used traveler's cheques) but we got a great deal and liked the hotel very much. Our room was not large but nicely furnished, very good sized bathroom. The location, the pool, the breakfast buffet and terrace made LaPerouse a very pleasant splurge. Ask the front desk for restaurant suggestions - ther are alot of choices in Old Nice but they helped us make good choices. SueC1

Suec1,

Thanks very much for the tip; I'll check that out, although I got a fairly decent rate from Orbitz after cancelling our direct reservation and changing room types. Oh, for the good old days of Club France! The last time we stayed at the La Pérouse we were upgraded to a very nice room on the 4th floor.

Underhill Mar 1st, 2004 11:48 AM

I looked at the La Pérouse web site but didn't see anything about a Dollars and Sense rate. Perhaps it's been discontinued?

suec1 Mar 1st, 2004 12:01 PM

Underhill: I just looked for it too and its not there - maybe with the dollar in such a dip they are not offering it anymore. We booked last spring for a trip in the fall and locked in the rate of $179 a nite - by the time we traveled and paid our bill in traveler's cheques we ended up getting an excellent rate. Have a great trip! SueC1

You definitely got a good deal!
