Hotels in Munich
 

We are staying in Munich October 5-7 and need to make a hotel reservation. We are interested in hotels in the Marienplatz area. We want nice but not too pricey. Any suggestions?

I would also suggest that you might mention the names of the hotels you've already considered.

Price range probably $80-175 US dollars and the only hotel someone recommended was the Platzl Hotel, which was a bit more but we were told it was a great place. When I contacted them, there was availability facing the street but they did warn me there was construction going on 7AM to 7PM so that kind of turned me off. Any further suggestions?

I've only been to Munich once and spent three days at Le Meridien on 41, Bayerstrasse directly across from the main train station. This was in May of this year.

It was 125 € at that time. Of course, I guess in October it is Octoberfest, so I don't know about the cost then.

It is not on the Marienplatz, rather about a 10 minute walk. It is only three years old, very nice hotel (4-5 star) and they upgraded us to a quite large room.

Hopefully, others will have some other suggestions for you.

We stayed at the Hotel Bristol - also about a 5-10 minute walk but 50 steps to the subway. I notice the rates fluctuate all over the place on the internet sites but still fits your price range.

I recal wonderful breakfast included, free interent use on the lobby and a decent room.

We liked the Platzl, just a block off the Marienplatz. Large rooms, good breakfast.

Oktoberfest ends Oct 3rd so prices will drop after that. Check out www.viamichelin.com . I found just this morning the rate at the Sheraton 5 star was $104 euros for a 2 person room. This web site will also map out where the hotel is and help in getting around the area. Have a great trip!

We personnaly recommend the Torbreau, but it might be just a bit more than you want to pay. Well worth it in my opinion.

When do you think they might drop prices? Le Meridian is in the $200 Euro range. Phoenix mentioned a 5 star Sheraton but I'm not sure which one you're talking about as Starwood has several listed. Any more web site suggestions out there? We want to have a nice place to lay our heads, especially the first night, as we will be tired from the flight over.

there is only one 5-star Sheraton, which is the Sheraton Grand. It is in Bogenhausen, which in general is a nice area, but the neighbourhood of the Sheraton is more of a business park. The butt-ugly 3-4 star Sheraton Bogenhausen is basically across the street (and I would not encourage booking there as this appears to be a cash cow sort of place where investments are not made unless absolutely necessary).

The Grand isn't pretty from the outside either (think 70ies style concrete) but underwent an extensive overhaul a few years ago. The hotel should be pretty fine, the location is more geared towards business travellers, though.

I am a big fan of the Le Meridien by the Central Station, as it usually offers the best value IMO. Evidently it is too expensive, though, for the dates you are considering.

You can also get good rates at the Munich Marriott, which is not in the Marienplatz area either, but out in a business park in Schwabing and close to the Englischer Garten Park, but there is swift public transportation into the city center and the hotel is of reliable Mariott quality.

I cannot think of any property close to Marienplatz that might cater to your profile other than the Platzl, but Munich resident and fellow Fodorite logos might be able to add some substance to the discussion. Should he/she not jump in here, try paging him through a separate thread!

Thanks for your help. I will check out the hotels mentioned and try the web sites. I wear an artificial leg but walk quite well. However, distances can be wearing on me. I want to be able to get to transportation easily that will allow us to see the city's attractions and also dine out in some fun places; so is the Marienplatz the best way to go? We've been told it's an area acessible to most attractions.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. We have confirmed a room at the Uhland Hotel. The price was unbelieveable (for what others were charging) and they were most helpful in answering other question we had about transportation in the area. From everything I've read, we should be very happy there.
