Hotels in Montreux?
 

If anyone has stayed at any of these hotels in Montreux could you please provide your opinion as to where I should stay?

topping your post... i have a friend in Montreux who puts me up & puts up with me, so don't know the hotels but LOVE that town.

I've stayed at the Eden twice and at the Victoria four times. Hope I can help --

The Eden's strong points are location, location, & location. It's centrally located just across from the Forum and steps from the casino, right at the lake's edge. You really are at the center of everything. Its service is so-so; its furnishings seem too-too; and its restaurant is almost bad.

The Victoria is my favorite hotel in the area -- as long as you don't mind being so far from the action. The views from Glion are stupendous, but you have to take the funicular to Territet or the train to Montreux to get down the hill (or walk down; that's one of my favorite walks in the area). On my last trip, I enjoyed the experience of taking the funicular with the hotel staff -- I felt like a local. If you're driving, it's still inconvenient to drive downhill on each trip, and it's very inconvenient if you've forgotten something for the day. However, as I said, the Victoria is my favorite -- service, ambiance, furnishings are perfect. The walls are a bit thin though.

Suisse Majestic is right across from the train station on Avenue des Alpes. The photos make it look like it's right on the lake, but that's a bit disceptive. You'd have a lake view but that's because it's up the hill and looking out over the other buildings/streets (I'm fairly certain).

Last September we stayed one night at Hotel Masson and enjoyed it enough to come back and spend our last two nights there. Food was ok, but not great, but it is Switzerland after all. The local red is good. Is only an hour from the Geneva airport.

I have also stayed at the Hotel Masson and enjoyed it very much. It is a short bus ride out of the main part of Montreux but you are provided with a bus card for use throughout the area when you stay at the hotel. It is very near the Chillon castle and the lakeside promenade. It is about a five minute walk up a hill - sometimes at the end of the day my weary little legs moaned as we walked up but it overall we enjoyed our stay there very much.

I can not comment on the others but we have stayed at the Victoria. It was our first stop, on our first trip to Europe, over 12 years ago. What a wonderful way to begin. We had a full board type arrangement, and a room with balcony on the top floor. I guess there is such as thing as beginners luck. It was completely wonderful in every way.

Does it have to be Montreux? If you include Vevey that gives you quite a few more lakefront options.

Regarding Hotel Masson, it looks lovely. Is a car required to get to the hotel, or is it reachable by train?
In general, is a car needed for the Lac Leman area?

Hotel Masson sits about a block from the lake between the two train stations, Montreux & Territet. It's about two miles from downtown Montreux to the Masson (the hotel is closer to the Territet station, but only infrequent local trains go by). There is a city bus (#1) that you can take from the Montreux station, or you can take a taxi if you have a lot of luggage.

I've been to Montreux eight times since 1995 and used a car once -- and hated it. You really do not need a car. The town is small enough that you can walk it in a few minutes, and the delight of the town is really strolling the lakeside promenade. If you don't want to stroll, you can take the bus or the ferry (www.cgn.ch).
