Gigi...lots of luch finding a "...lovely, comfortable hotel..." in either city for under 200 a night.

BUT, we stayed in a very nice hotel, about 5 minute walk from San Marco in Venice in 1996. The price then was 200k lira, about $135 at that time. Room was a little small, but very lovely and on a canal. It was so very convenient, and by Venice standards a real bargain. Name is Hotel Lisbona

In Milan, believe it or not, a Best Western...Hotel Berlino. It's in an apartment neighborhood; streetcar about 3 or 4 blocks away. Nice clean room at 135k lira, about $90 then. And, at that time, 90 bucks was a bargain for ANYTHING in Milan.

Gigi:
Will you send me a review of the hotels you end up choosing when you return. . .I'm looking for such hotels in both cities as well.

You should definitely visit the internet site at www.venere.it. You can search for the hotels you want, get the prices (good ones) and can book straight away. They also check availability and transfer the prices to the currency you're using. I found a very nice three star hotel (double room 175.000 liras per night, that's about 90 Euros per night) in Milan for the New Year 2001.

... 90 Euros equals about 80 dollars so it's not expensive and it's only 10 minutes walk from both il Duomo (center) and Stazione Centrale (the main railway Station). So you really find good hotels there!

Gigi,
Here is the hotel we stayed in Venice 2 years ago:

Hotel Albergo Campiello
Venice, Italy
Fax: 011-39-41-520-57-98

It is a small hotel, has a superb location, also about 5 minute walk from San Marco (right by the San Zacharia "bus" stop). I don't remember the rate, but we we're ususally not big spenders, so it's worth a try.
Amik.

Gigi:

It's more of a challenge to find a hotel "with character" in Milan; in Venice there's nothing but.

On my recent (albeit brief) visit to Milan, I stayed at the "London Hotel" on Via Rovello. What it provided was a pleasant accommadation (think it's a 3 star?) in an excellent location on a quiet street. I found it in Rick Steves' book and it turned out to be exactly as he described (some of his hotel suggestions are not always as reliable).

Stayed for 1 night (Nov 5) - room was a single - paid 135,000 lire (approx $65). Think that doubles were running around 200,000 lire.
Hotels usually require you to reserve with a credit card; however in smaller places they sometimes will give you a better rate if you pay in cash.
Gigi-
For Venice I highly recommend the Hotel Kette. Its a small, charming hotel with a great location (5 minutes to San Marcos and vapporetto stop), warm friendly staff and truly venetian decor in the rooms. The rooms were VERY comfortable (noise travels a bit, so ask for a room on the top floors)with a bathroom on the smallish side. Great breakfast. We stayed there this year at the end of August/early Sept. and it was about $160 a night.
We had a wonderful meal at Al Covo.
We just spent 4 nights (Nov 9-12) at the Spadari al Duomo in Milan. We loved it. Very modern decor, but a great location about two blocks off the Duomo square and right next to the Peck's store. We paid $220 per night for a very romantic two story suite (jacuzzi upstairs, bedroom and bath down with a two story living area facing an interior courtyard). Very helpful staff, and we never had a bad meal for the four days.
In venice, the Accademia is my favorite

For Venice, I second the recommendation of Hotel Campiello. We stayed there last February, for around $200 for a large room holding five people. It's back off the Riva Schiavone, so it's close to the action (2-minute walk to San Marco) but relatively quiet. I believe they have a website, so do a search.

I would do a search on this forum for Venice and Milan hotels and you'll get tons of recommendations. Also, go to www.venere.it and you'll see alot of great hotels and their websites. We stayed at the Locando Leon Bianco in Venice. It was a wonderful, small and friendly place on the Grand Canal close to the Rialto bridge. It was not too expensive and was full of charm. Have a great trip.
