Hotels in London more quaint than modern.

Has anyone stayed at the Bentley Hilton or Hotel 41? We are 2 mature couples looking for a 3 night stay in a good location for walking and near public transportation mid Sept. 2012. Preferably no more than 400 US dollars per night.
thank you

Oh no, the "Q" word.

Why not B&Bs?

nmonte Dec 29th, 2011 10:40 AM

We prefer hotels to B&Bs; but usually smaller family owned hotels like the Villa Schuler in Taromina. I've never been to London so maybe I can't expect a central location w/a smaller hotel? Do I need to apologize for using the "Q" word?
I just meant I usually don't like chain hotels. I realize quaint in a City is different than quaint in the country.

Quaint can get some locals riled up. Best to just say "small, non-chain" :)

Here are two that I've stayed at, one B&B, one hotel. Both in Bloomsbury, both bnear public trasnit (which is easy in central london), both within walking distance of British Museum..I've also walked from these to St Paul's, Covent Garden, Trafalgar Sq. Also good selection of restaurants and shopping nearby.

Durrant's Hotel. Easy walk to British Museum, transportation. Old fashioned, not large. Or at least the part I saw was not large.

Probably renovated all to hell now, but maybe not.

Hotel 41 is very nice. It's close to Buckingham Palace and practically next door to the Rubens at the Palace. Good location for walking and easy access to public transportation for London sightseeing. I'm not familar with the Bentley Hilton.

Heavens don't apologize for using the word 'quaint'. Quaint probably translates best (in London) as traditional and/or boutique hotels, but not sure how many are actually family owned.

The Mountbatten is part of the Radisson Edwardian chain but might fit your criteria. Great location at 7 Dials.

Note quaint=small rooms but that has not posed a problem for me as location trumps small rooms,, particularly for a short stay.

Thank you, I'll check out all of the above. The Academy looked perfect; but I was surprised to see that the reviews on TripAdvisor weren't great.

Dolphin House is a wonderfully quiet spot. The tranquillity is all the more surprising given its close proximity to Victoria, making it convenient for Westminster and ...

I stayed at Academy as part of an Expedia flight/hotel combo in May 2010. I felt I got a good price.

Place has character, bed good, staff professional, breakfast good but pricy. I did not use their outdoor area, nor afternoon tea. I liked being given business cards with my name and phone number on them.

My one small point of dissatisfaction was that I forgot an AC adapter, front desk did not have one on hand, so I had to go over to Tottingham Ct and buy one.
