Hotels in Lisbon?

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay in Lisbon? We generally enjoy places that are charming - B&Bs or something with a local flavor - rather than American style hotels that are the same in every city. Any recommendations related to Lisbon in general would also be appreciated. Thanks!

We stayed at York House. Vine covered stairs lead to a patio sheltered by an enormous pineapple palm tree which covers the outdoor dining area. Our room was lovely, two canopy double beds and a sitting area. Large bathroom. I don't recall price exactly but likely around $200 or less for the double. On main bus line and also possible to walk to main part of Lisbon.

Cate, try Hotel di Merda, Hotel Frocio, Hotel Villano, Hotel Pappone, Hotel Ladro, or Hotel Squaldrina.

Belem and Julie - We probably won't be renting a car...which would be best for a central location? Thanks! Cate

Belem -

Tried to look up your first recommendation...looks like you're playing a joke, n'est-ce pas? Seems mean and silly... Cate

Try the Lisboa Plaza - very central, really charming, and a good deal. I had a suite with a gorgeous huge bathroom and breakfast for $95.

I travel 'on the cheap.' That said, I recommend Residencial Estrela do Saldanha, Avda. de la Republica, 17 at Metro Lisboa Saldanha (Duque de Avila exit). Continental breakfast is included in the room rate and last time I was there it was in Pasteleria Versailles (one of Lisbon's 'golden oldies') just next door. All rooms are ensuite but there are few other amenities. Carlos Ferreira, co-owner / manager speaks pretty good English.

You can contact them by e-mail [email protected] and I believe they have a web site.

just 2 notes to Nedsireland:
1 - website of Residencial Estrela is http://www.residencialsaldanha.pt
2 - the combination "de la" is strange to Portuguese language. The address is "Avenida da Republica"
