Hotels in Krakow

I'm looking for advice on chosing a nice hotel in Krakow with some character or old-world elegance, preferably fairly quiet and worth-price-charged. We're only staying a weekend so think we want to stay in the old city.

Hotels I've heard about include Amadeaus; the Grand - sounds like it's not worth-price-charged -- correct? Pod Roza sounds good - but one comment said it had a noisy casino? Copernicus - but it's outside the old city, isn't it? Pollera & Polonia sound pleasant but more basic than the others - correct?

Comments and other suggestions most welcome! Thanks.

Hello, We visited Krakow in October and stayed at the Hotel Saski, which I definitely recommend. It is in Old Town, about 1/2 block from the Main Square. Excellent location! The lobby is old-world elegance with a very ornate 100-year old elevator. Our triple room was large with high ceilings, clean but plain. Their website shows some elegant looking rooms but ours was plain. (nothing on the walls.) The price included breakfast in a lovely restaurant next door, old European style, warm woods, etc. Hotel & restaurant staff were polite, warm and helpful. We had a drink at the Polonia while waiting for our train. Waiter was very nice but we didn't care for the lobby or the location...close to the train station. From what I saw, I would not recommend the Polonia.I think it's much nicer staying in Old Town. Are you arriving by train? We took a cab from the train station to the Saski. It's about a 5 minute ride and costs about $5.00. The Saski was quiet when we were there.
Hope this helps.

Hi, I also recommend the Saski, couldn't be closer to the square, is very reasonably priced and elegant.
Like Kwoo, we were put in a very plain room for 3 at first, but as we'd booked a room with a bath, not a shower we questioned it at reception and were moved straight away to a much bigger room.
We were very happy with the room,it was very comfortable (as were the beds) and the staff were very helpful, but agree that the room was not as fancy as the ones shown on the website.
I hadn't seen the website till tonight (we weren't online when we were there a few years ago), so in future I would ask them for a particular room I liked the look of!

It's been a few years, but we stayed at the Grand and were delighted. Just a block from the main square, but very quiet. Very old-world elegant in the main reception areas and also in our room. Beautiful bathroom with the deepest tub I've ever seen. (Heavenly after a day of sightseeing on foot.)It was pricey, but not outrageous. Maybe that's changed?

We stayed in Hotel Wentzl in Sept. It is a 12 room hotel, located directly on the main square in the Old Town. Our room overlooked St. Mary's Church and the Cloth Hall. I think all rooms do. It is in a 15th century bldg. Our room was comfortable, quite large with approx. 12 ft. beamed ceiling, oriental style rugs and modern bath. The room was very quiet, thanks to double windows. Breakfast is included in the price and was also very good. The only downside is that there is no elevator but the staff took our bags to the room.
Our room was on the 3rd floor (2nd as floors are numbered in Poland) so lack of an elevator did not bother us but if stairs are a problem, beware. Most of the rooms are shown on the hotel's website at: www.wentzl.pl Week-end rate in Sept. was 130 Euro double. We considered it good value for the price.

If you request the blue and white suite on the first floor at the Pollera Hotel(what is called the second floor in the USA), you will defintely not be disappointed.

It is huge and beautifully decorated in old world, antique furniture. You can see part of the suite on the hotel's web page, but it definitely does not do it justice.

The suite includes a very large, well-appointed foyer, a sitting room with sofa, two armchairs, coffee table and mini-bar with serving station. There are pocket doors that connect the sitting room to the bedroom. The bedroom had a sit-down vanity, writing desk, full-length (self-standing) dressing mirror, TV, along with nightstands and twin beds side-by side.

The floors were hardwood, covered with oriental area rugs.

The bathroom was immense--all marble double vanity, marble floor, huge tub, bidet, WC and separate shower.

I was quite impressed, and the price is much more moderate than the Wentzl.

We could not have been more pleased with this choice. It was definitely an "Oh My Goodness!!" room.
