hotels in Italy
 

taking a globus tour in a few weeks. it seems as if they changed all the hotels for the tour. the ones i am now staying at do not look nearly as nice as the ones listed in the brochure. any advice on the following would be helpful
Capri - La Residenza
Assisi - Windsor Savoia
Venice - Antony (via Orlanda)
Montecatini Terme - Astoria
Rome - Mediterraneo

What kind of advice are you looking for. If you're looking for their location or other information you can probably get that from the hotel web sites.

You can't change the hotels and if you cancel the tour only a few weeks before you'll lose most of your money.

Tour groups often change the hotels based on last-minute availability but normally put you into a similiar type hotel. In what way do the new hotels not look as nice.

ratings do not seem good on trip advisor. rooms look very out dated. i knew going into the trip that it was different than USA hotels, but seems like the original list of hotels the pictures were more updated. just wondered if anyone has stayed at these hotels and what their experience was like

I can't comment on the quality of the hotels, but can on the locations of two.

Your Venice hotel is not on the island, but on the mainland. It's on the road between Venice Mestre (the mainland town) and Marco Polo Airport. There is a local bus that runs along via Orlanda from the airport to Mestre and then to the island. It would also be a quick cab ride. This would not be my choice of where to stay for easy access to Venice or to experience this magical city.

Your Rome hotel is located near Roma Termini, the main Rome train station. There are many tourist hotels in this area which lacks the charm of the old center of town. I've stayed in the area when on a budget. It's not my favorite, but there is easy access to all metro lines and bus routes from the nearby Termini station that will take you wherever you need to go. Also in the area are a few churches worth visiting (Santa Maria Maggiore, Santa Prassede, Santa Sabina . . .) as well as my favorite restaurant in Rome, Trattoria Monti.

The Rome Hotel is right downtown, which makes an improvment over most Tour choices which are in the suburbs of Rome.So looks like Globus have done you proud in Rome itself.

The choice for Venice (Mestre ouskirts) is pretty standard for bus tours and there are some surprisingly good restaurants in Mestre that won't break your budget if you are stuck there for a meal.But as has been said, easy train or cab into access to Venice proper.

The Savoia in Assisi is just fine.

Don't know the rest.

I doubt that Globus is pulling a fast one. It is their right to offer different hotels. It is part of the give and take of taking a tour versus personal planning.

I am not a spokesperson for Globus (or any other group) but I have dealt with a lot of group tours and they do their darndest to please their guests. I have good friends that did a Globus tour of Italy as first-time-to-Europe travelers and really loved it.

If Globus has guaranteed you a certain star rating for your hotels, keep in mind that star ratings in Italy are based on amenities offered rather than quality of decor. Outdated rooms may not affect a star rating as much as the presence of an on-site restaurant, elevator, or meeting rooms.

My mother did a Globus Tour of Italy in 2005 and loved it. Group tours are not my thing but Mom got a lot of bang for her buck with all that Globus included. Oh, and I strongly second ellenem recommendation for Trattoria Monte - great food!

Europe is old.

Most things in europe - including hotels - are old. New Is quite rare.

Old shouldn't worry you. Concerns are location, service and clenliness. (After all, when picking a modestly priced tour you can't expect to get elegance and the best location in town - just acceptble quality and not at the end of hell and gone.)

Agree that many tour groups put you in Mestre instead of Venice. I don't think it should be allowed - but they seem to keep getting away with it.

You really only have cause for complaint (if you read your tour brochure carefully) if they don;t give you a "similar" hotel. And they get to decide what "similar" means.

I would concnetrate on locating your hotels versus what you want to se/do in the free time that you have. And figuring out the local transport in advance so it's not surprize when you get there.

Was the original advertised hotel for Venice in Mestre? Because if they switched me from Venice to Mestre, I would not be ok with that.

If this is "The Best of Italy" Globus tour, the accomodations listing mentions a Venice hotel at Mestre.

If you've got $$$ at stake, just enjoy being in Italy; next time you can book your own hotels. The only way to control your schedule, accommodations, restaurants is to do it yourself. A lot more trouble, but if you are concerned about hotel standards, etc.

She's not staying at the Anthony Palace Hotel, just the Antony Hotel (on via Orlanda)--they are two different places. Here's the Antony:
