Hotels in Garmisch
 

My wife has the luck to be able to go to Garmisch for a week in September for work. Unfortunately, I can't go, but my Mother is going. We need to find a centrally located hotel (probably max of $200). We are eligible b for the military hotel, but it appears to be booked. My Mom will be alone during the day, so walking distance to things is best. We used to live in Germany years ago and she really loves the area.

We have used the Hilleprandt Hotel on numerous occasions. It is located in a quiet neighborhood near Garmisch. They have a web site with photos. The people were always nice. Rooms 1 and 2 are on the first floor and have patios.

Check out recent posts on Trip Advisor or some other site.

Rooms have a way of opening up in the military hotel system. The one at Garmisch is particularly nice. I would keep trying.

If being centrally located is important, I would not try any more for the Edelweiss Lodge. It's waaay out on Zugzpitzstr, and your wife and mom would have to take a bus in.

By "central" do you mean around Marienplatz in Garmisch or near Ludwigstr in Partenkirchen or near Richard-Strauss-Platz in Garmisch or near the train station?

Sorry I cannot help with a specific recommendation as I've only stayed in an apartment in Mittenwald. But I've heard good things about some nice hotels such as the Drei Mohren and the Gasthof Fraundorfer. Also, I had lunch one day at the Garmischer Hof, which is very close to the train station; it seemed very nice.

We usually stay outside of town when we travel to Garmish area.

But one year we stayed at the Frauendorfer in their outer apartments.

Very clean and comfortable. However as you know the Frauendorfer is a great place for a dinner gathering, but it is on the outskirts of the area in the Parkenkirchen side of G/P.

Would be a good location for walking that part of town.

Hotel Roter Hahn is under your price range. Close to the train station and a 5 minute walk to the main pedestrian street in Garmisch.

The other responders have been on target . . . the Frauendorfer is great but it's way over in Partenkirchen, not an easy walk to the big busy chic shopping area in Garmisch. The Edelweiss Lodge is also a fair hike to the centrum.

We have stayed several times right on Marienplatz, literally yards away from the beginning of the upscale shopping area, at the Clausings Post Hotel. It has apparently changed names since the last time we stayed there a couple of years ago and you'll find them here ... http://www.clausings-posthotel.de/ as the 'Atlas-Post Hotel'. For location, Bavarian charm, etc. you won't find anything better in Garmisch.

The military hotel is a good deal for military folk, but if you really want a taste of Germany, I'd avoid it like the plague. Get a room in a local Gasthof, pension, or hotel.

True, one only sees other Americans there, and the hotel itself is not a German experience, but it is very close to the center of town and everything that Garmisch has to offer. It is a big hotel and the experience is like many other big hotels. Big hotels tend not to give a true in-country experience. I agree that a Gasthof, Pension and especially a zimmer is so much more authentic and those have been my first choice too for those reasons. Yet, if one wants big hotel ambiance, then the military hotel is a good choice if you are elegible. As far as a good deal, it is for its class, but it is far from inexpensive.
