My husband and I will be in Florence for 5 nights in September. We are arriving from Venice. I'm looking for a hotel that is centrally located to the train station so that we can take day trips - Pisa, Siena - without having to spend a lot of time getting back and forth from the train.

Any recommendations appreciated. Hoping for something under $200/night.

If I'm nuts to think that we need to be near the train station please advise. If it's no big deal to get there for day trips then general recommendations for hotels appreciated.

Might as well throw this in: opera in Florence?? Or any interesting music suggestions?

If you want the best of both go to Google maps, enter Florence Italy hotels and zoom in on Piazza di Santa Maria Novella that's opposite the train station but on the side of the historic area.

There are several hotels right on the Square and it's ideal for sight seeing in Florence as well as the proximity to the train station. We stayed there twice.

You can also pick from hotels along Via Della Scala just off the square.

I don't think you need to be next to the train station since Florence is so compact.

FYI - Siena is better by bus as the train station in Siena is out a bit (you would need to get other transport from Siena's station ot the center)and the bus drops you at the historic center. Travel time by bus is a bit faster. Cost is the same.

I've stayed a couple of blocks from the station before (between the station and the Duomo) at Alloro B&B.

Hotel Aurora is correct, not de luxe, and suits your budget.
Located a hundred steps from both the train and bus stations, and almost next door to the excellent Osteria Dell'Oste.

Check its web site and you can see if it is what you need.
