The search function turned up the following:

Author: Heather ([email protected])
Date: 4/25/2001, 7:18 pm ET
Message: Hello! In the May/June issue of Expedia magazine, there is an article on 10 good value hotels in Florence. The price ranges are pretty good and the photos are very nice. Since so many posts here mention looking for reasonable rooms in Florence's city center, I scanned the article and would be happy to send it to anyone who would like a copy.

If you are interested, please email me at the above address.

Also, here is a list of the hotels mentioned, if any Fodorites would like to post comments from experience:

Hotel Loggiato dei Serviti
Hotel Continental
Hotel Torre Guelfa
Hotel J and J
Relais Uffizi
Hotel Silla
Hotel Morandi alla Crocetta
Hotel Villa Belvedere
Hotel Benivieni
Hotel Tornabuoni Beacci

The also list "six more good bets":
Hotel Monna Lisa
Hotel Principe
Hotel Hermitage
Albergotto Hotel
Hotel Il Guelfo Bianco
Hotel Paris

The article includes a nice map showing where the hotels are located in relation to major landmarks.

Happy travels!
*********************************
Author: Boots ([email protected])
Date: 1/20/2001, 6:05 pm ET
Message: Il Guelfo Bianco is a three-star at via Cavour, 57 R. It is 5 minutes from the Duomo, 5 minutes from the Accademia Museum, 10 from the Arno. The rooms are lovely, and I think Carlo Cenni is the best hotel manager I have met in some sixty trips abroad. It is probably in the $150-$175 range.
****************************************
Author: sue ([email protected])
Date: 11/04/2000, 1:45 pm ET
Message: yes - go for a 3 star hotel - more to choose from and more reliable....Belletini, Il Guelfo Bianco, Calziouli, etc.

We stayed at the Loggiato di Serviti about 3 years ago and I would highly recommend it. All of the rooms are different. Ours overlooked the rear grounds of the Academia. It was great waking up to the sound of nearby church bells. It also was a short walk to the Duomo, etc.

If this is the one on Via Cavour -- the location is fabulous. We walked past it on our way to dinner (we stayed at Hotel Casci) and the lobby area looked nice.

Just returned from Florence and stayed at the Hotel Porta Faenza, a three star hotel. The website is http://www.venere.com/it/firenze/faenza/
It is in easy walking distance to the train station, the Medici Chapels and the Duomo.

Like Diane, I saw the Hotel Il Guelfo Bianco while staying at the Hotel Casci. Being curious, I went in and checked out a room. It was clearly a couple of notches above the Casci in terms of decor, and furnishings, and I heard that the breakfasts are really good. The staff was hospitable and it seemed like a very nice place to stay. The location is wonderful, and is one of the main reasons I often recommend the Hotel Casci for bargain hunters. It is comfortable, very clean and has all the necessities--safe deposit boxes, air conditioning, good mattresses and pillows, nice sheets and towels, good soundproofing, helpful owners, etc.
But if I wanted to upgrade a little bit I would happily give the Guelfo Bianco a try. Hope this helps.
