Hotels in Barcelona and Madrid

We are going to Barcelona and Madrid in July.
We want a nice hotel with a great location-we heard hotel Arts is great but I am afraid it's too expensive. Has anyone stayed there and what is the price of the room? Natalie

Last June we stayed at the H10 Placa Catalunya. It was about 155E including breakfast.

Directly on the square. Location can't be beat.

Breakfast room on the 2nd floor over-looking the square. Computer just outside the breakfast room for guest use.

Would definitely stay there again.

natjgc - you can find conversions at

In Madrid, I stayed at High Tech Petit Ducal Palace, a nice hotel across the street from the metro, and it was about $70 a night (I went in February - low season).

In Barcelona, I stayed at Hostal Palacio, a few blocks from the Plaza Catalunia in the Eixample neighborhood. I also enjoyed this hotel. It was about $75 a night for a single.

You might also try the Hotel Balmes in the Eixample district. It is modern and clean, but not a lot of personality; service was very good. I believe we paid 110E per night for a couple in March 2004, plus a 30E or so supplement for a third adult in the room.

The Arts is a very nice hotel, although I am not sure I would call the location great. However in July when it is hot, you would appreciate their pool and being by the beach. Not sure what your budget is, but the cheapest room they are showing on their website for July is 390 Euros (about $500). They also have package and specials. There are lots of other nice hotels in Barcelona and Madrid in lower price ranges.

HI Cicerone,

We would love to spend less than $250 a night if possible- even less really-
I know the American dollar isn't so great in Europe- I was just in London and really had to watch my spending.
We want a good location in both cities.
