Hotels in Avignon

I'll be spending several days in Avignon in April and am considering two hotels, the Mercure Cite des Papes and the Primotel Horloge. I'd appreciate it if anyone who has stayed at either of these hotels could share their experiences with me. Thanks!

Juliette, we stayed at Mercure a few years ago and thought it was fine - quiet, clean, convenient, good breakfast, no complaints. We think the Accor chain (of which Mercure is a part) offers good value and predictably high quality.

Looking into hotels in Avignon as well. Both of these seem to be in the same very central location. Any others to recommend in that same area?

A number of years ago I stayed at the hotel de l'Europe which was very nice, great location, moderately priced, charming.

I stayed at the Hotel D'Europe a long time ago (the 80s) and dropped in in 1998. I thought it was a wonderful place to stay with little balaconies on the street, a wonderful restaurant. It has a great and interesting location which is near one of the old city gates and on a square so it isn't that hard to get to by car, while being just down the street from the Place D'Hourlonge. It looked like it had maintained the high quality when I last visted, but I didn't stay there.

5 years ago---Mercure - large, no charm.
Had no room for us when we wanted to
stay longer. Desk clerk very helpfully
made reservations for us at the Primotel
Horlodge. Very attractive and convenient
and although the room was a lot smaller
it did cost less.
