Hotels in Athens
My husband and I (both seniors) will be spending several days in Athens before and after a tour of the Peleponnese.
There are so many hotel choices....I am looking for central, some luxury...what do recent travellers to Athens recommend? I am leaning to Athens Gate..comments?

For central luxury I like the Grand Bretagne. It is located on Syntagma Square, within walking distance of most places you want to go. They have a great rooftop restaurant and bar with a fabulous view of the Acropolis.

Athen's Gate is great, though I wouldn't call it luxurious. We've stayed at Electra Palace, also, and it was definitely more luxurious than Athen's Gate.
We've never stayed at Grand Bretagne but highly recommend the rooftop restaurant.

I would go to the Grand Bretagne for drinks and views. I would stay at the Electra Palace, which also has a great rooftop bar. And it's in a perfect location.
An Absolute Martini and pistachios on the rooftop while the lights come on the Acropolis.... one of those all time BEST moments!

We stayed at the Heriodion Hotel on our last trip to Athens and really enjoyed it. It isn't luxurious, but it is very nice, and the location near the new Acropolis Museum was fantastic. You're just around the corner from the Plaka too. We'd previously stayed at Adrian Hotel in the Plaka and found it tired and dated in 2006 and much worse in 2009.

HI, We are planning our 2nd trip back to Athens (after a Windstar cruise). In 2008 we stayed at the Athens Gate. We very much liked it, also a good rooftop bar. My parents still talk about it, as they were given an upgraded room with a balcony over looking the temple of Zeus. My husband wants to go back there. BUT I am looking around. I am willing to spend a bit more money this time (on our own) and be a bit more upscale with more room. Maybe direct in Plaka, which I LOVED!

We have recently booked three nights at the Grand Olympic based on recommendations. I emailed the hotel directly, they got back to us promptly in perfect English. Haven't stayed yet so cannot make a first hand recommendation but location seems to be perfect and it has a roof top restaurant with views.

Just spent a few days in Athens and stayed at the Athens Gate Hotel.
The Hotel is in a fantastic location with easy walking access to many sites of interest including the Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Plaka, Monastiraki, Syntagma Square, National Gardens, etc.
The rooftop restaurant has the most spectacular views of the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus and Athens. Breakfast is good and the restaurant has quite a decent menu for dinner.
The service is super right from check-in. The hotel and rooms are spotlessly clean. The lobby is very nicely appointed.
Regarding the rooms...they are rather on the small side, as are the bathrooms. We had a room on the front of the hotel looking out on the Temple of Zeus. The street noise can be quite loud if the door to the balcony is left open.
I would probably stay there again. Overall, it would appear to be good value.

You might have a look at the Electra Palace Hotel, on the edge of the Plka near Syntagma Square. It also has a rooftop bar and restaurant with views of the Parthenon. I stayed there several years ago, very good hotel, great location.
