Actually, the better, weekly market is on Saturday at Place Verdun.

Aix-en-Provence 13100 (Bouches-du-Rhône)
Sat (Every) - Brocante, Marché; Place Verdun. Mornings; a big market, one of the best, and our favorite.
Sun (1st) - Brocante books; Place Mairie
Tue (Every) - Brocante, Marché; Place Verdun
Thur (Every) - Brocante, Marché; Place Verdun

The market linked above is more of a daily, local market for fruits and veggies and the like. Not that it isn't a good market, just not the one that most tourists would visit.

When we were there for a week in 1997, the entire Cours Mirabeau seemed to close every other day and the entire street became a huge market -- or various types. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think they might have been working on the site of Place Verdun so the markets were re-located to the Cours. Just thinking that as much of the city (particularly the old city) was torn up for construction -- new sewers or water pipes or something!

I never noticed any market on Cours Mirabeau myself, during my stays there. The one near city hall is the official one AFAIK, but it's only food. The cathedral is worth seeing, also. There are a couple museums over there, also, like the city history museum.

There was a Christmas market getting underway on Cours Mirabeau when I was there at the end of November, but the "real" market was elsewhere.

Yes, Christina, as I suggested, I'm thinking it was unusual that all those markets were on the Cours, but I think it's because of construction in the old city. I do remember the staff at our hotel complaining about the inconvenience of all those crowds practically outside our hotel day after day and the fact that no one could get to the hotel itself by car because of the markets.

We were in Aix for a week a few years back in late July and during that week there was a wine festival on the Cours Mirabeau on Saturday as well as an art fair thing every evening.

We're in the process of finding a hotel in Aix for September '17 and came across this thread.

NeoPatrick, would you mind telling me where you wound up staying? How was it?

I've reserved at the Roi Rene for many of the same reasons you considered it. We won't have a car so parking is not an issue. Distance from the center and "freshness" of rooms are high on the list however.

We did stay at the Roi Rene. It was really lovely. The entire hotel seemed to be very recently done with wonderful taste and quality. It's a short stroll to the center of town, and they even told us where we could walk to a laundromat which was great and necessary after 10 days "on the road". Breakfasts were superb. We joined the McGallery collection and got a better rate and I think free breakfast. Our room was not huge -- I think we got the standard one, but again it was very nicely done and super comfortable.

Thanks very much for your response NeoPatrick! Allays my concerns. I did join the Accor "club" to get a better rate but no breakfast I'm afraid. Will have to venture out in search of the morning croissant; there are worse fates.

Glad you had a good stay. Any recommendations for sights, sites, meals, etc. you would care to share?

Not really. We mainly used it as a base for some travels out during the day. All our meals there were good, but nothing that really jumped out as outstanding.
