Whew! Finding alot of good books recommending various hotels. Looking for smaller hotels WITH character. Value is also important. What is your opinion of these three hotels.

Can speak only of the Hermitage in Florence which I would recommend highly. Superb views of Florence from the sixth floor; "next door" to the Uffizi on the banks of the Arno; 50 yards from the Ponte Vecchio. Capable multilingual staff of young women very much up to date on the goings on in Florence. (Follow their dining recommendations.)

Hello Duck, I like your choices but I love your
choice of locations. Possible options will be the
Casa Albertina in Positano and Moranda Crocetti in
Florence. You have done your homework--good luck.

I disagree with the Hotel Hermitage recommendation. We stayed there in 1995, and while it is very centrally located, and while the rooftop does have a lovely view, I thought that the rooms were on the small side and rather "antiseptic". No charm.

I recently visited Florence and stayed
4 night at Hotel Hermitage. Its best
quality is the location. The room was
entirely too small, practically no air
conditioning, mattresses were horrible, I thought I was sleeping on a sliding
board. They did flip the mattress, but
it wasn't much better. Walls were like
tissue paper Rm#102, we could hear the
couple next door sneeze. I would not
stay there again. They can give you
excellect dinner recommendations, especially the restaurant next door
"Bucca".
